Nexercise is a mobile app that motivates users to exercise. They app communicates to a REST API running in Grails (Rails with Groovy) on a MySQL backend. At first, the projects involved small adjustments and enhancements that are off the critical path, like data collection controllers and debugging/testing tools. However, most recently, I found a hole in their authentication system that could allow users with malicious intent to have full access to the API, and now I am working on a more robust authentication system between the client and the server.Sqord is a system that makes active play fun for kids. It provides wristbands with built-in accelerometers to track activity, which is synced with a base station provided to schools and other institutions. This updates the web account, where kids can compete against their friends for "sqoins" in games like "sqorcher" and "sqord squad". I do enjoy the namin convention. They run on a Spring Server (Java) with a MySQL database. After a few starter projects, I am now working on a new feature where students can tag activity with both specific exercises and the friends that they were doing those exercises with.SocialCrunch is a platform where users answer multiple-choice questions and find out how their friends answered the same questions. This data is used to create trends which can be sold to advertising firms. I just started working with them today by testing various front-end designs locally.WebCurfew, formally HiPOM, gives parents control of their child's online behavior through an easy web interface. The website actually interfaces with the client's home router, providing everything from MAC address filtering to DNS and port filtering. They are beginning also to embrace the internet of things, using microcontrollers to control everyday objects and the existing functionality of WebCurfew to configure them. Later this week, I'll be working with them on expanding this latter feature.

As my first internship, at Spantree I learned everything from understanding a software stack to managing code testing.The software stack I worked with is actually quite unique: MongoDB under ElasticSearch and a Grails web server on Amazon EC2 with various plugins like Spring Security Social.At the time of work, Spantree owned a significant percentage of Chicago.com, which was the main focus of development. In addition, I helped with a project from NRG (Networking Research Group) and the open source demo OkMercury (okmercury.co).
