About Emad Kiyaei

Emad Kiyaei works at the intersection of international security, diplomacy and existential risk. Emad is a director at the Middle East Treaty Organization (METO), which seeks to advance peace, security and stability through innovative policy, advocacy and educational programs. He is also the co-founder and director at AiXist, the consortium for artificial intelligence (AI) and existential risk. The consortium unites a broad spectrum of experts, organizations, and stakeholders to collectively tackle the existential risks posed by AI development and convergence with advanced weapon systems, specifically nuclear, biological and autonomous weapons. He is the co-author of Weapons of Mass Destruction: A new approach to non-proliferation, published by Routledge. He is also a senior advisor to the Berkeley-based innovation lab, Goodly Labs, where he provides strategic advice in policy formulation, fusing technology and social science research to identify and mitigate the spread of misinformation.Emad lectures on international security issues at various institutions, including Geneva Center for Security Policy, University of Cape Town, Hamilton and Marymount Colleges. Emad provides mentorship to students, young professionals and entrepreneurs engaged in social-impact startups that leverage the power of technology for the greater good.Formerly, he was a researcher on nuclear nonproliferation and geopolitics for Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), based in the School of Public and International Affairs. He was also an associate at Columbia University’s Center for International Conflict Resolution (CICR). Emad also served as executive director of the American Iranian Council (AIC), a nonprofit and nonpartisan educational organization that focuses on US-Iran relations. Emad contributes and provides interviews to national and international media, including Al Jazeera, BBC, Business Insider, CBS, Foreign Policy, NPR and PBS. He also appeared in the renowned documentary on cyber warfare, Zero Days. He has also been invited to speak and participate at conferences and institutions worldwide, including at the Afro-Middle East Center, Chatham House, Georgetown University, Harvard University, King’s College, MIT, United Nations, US Institute of Peace and Yale University. He holds a Master’s of International Affairs from Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs.
