Angela Davis once said "I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept." My name is Elaina and I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. Now I am looking to change the things I cannot accept. My background in psychology connects me directly to the human mind. I have a passion for understanding what makes humans tick and then finding ways in which to help them achieve their goals. I believe every human has the potential and the right to a happy and successful life. In the middle of my college career I took a break and worked full time at two different middle schools as a paraprofessional in special education. During this time, I found a passion for helping at risk people. I worked with a diverse group of children. Many were minorities and most were living in poverty. I was motivated to ensure every student in my care had everything they needed to succeed in school. It was my goal to be many of my students one person they could rely on in any situation. When I returned to college, I used my practical experience in all of my classwork. This helped to connect my education to real life experience. This makes me a valuable person. I have a degree along with professional experience which is hard to find. In my junior year I was able to attend an alternative spring break trip to St. Louis, Missouri. Here I volunteered with a non-profit dealing with a variety of resources for the community. Along with this volunteer experience, I have volunteered with the Harbor House for Domestic Violence victims. I have structured my time in college around taking classes that directly involved working with a diverse population this includes courses in cultural diversity as well as African American studies. In addition, I have seven years experience working in homes as a behavioral technician for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.I have begun to change the things I cannot accept, however my work is never done.
