HHRC is a 152 bed residential facility for complex care residents. It has an operating budget of $10.5 million and staff of nearly 200. It is privately owned but funded through the Interior Health Authority. GENERAL MANAGERThe position was responsible for overseeing the care delivery and change initiatives, financial management, human resource management, and quality improvements. Because the organization had undergone substantial change, it required a steady but innovative leader who engaged people in the process, providing clear and consistent direction and encouragement.

Started in 1995 at the Victoria location, RRU has pioneered the “blended learning” model to provide adult distance-based education that can transform the communities and workplaces of its graduates. With a combination of on-line courses and residencies, RRU has successfully made interdisciplinary graduate education accessible to students from many countries.After graduating in 2003, I maintained my link with RRU as Associate Faculty, Academic Supervisor. After teaching online courses, I continue to supervise graduate students completing their major research projects. This provides the opportunity to stay current with leadership and organizational literature as well as involved in applied research in many organizations.

My initial mandate as the Interim Executive Director was to stabilize the organization and re-establish relationships with external organizations, specifically the Ministry of Health. By working with the staff and Board of Directors, I developed the workplan to address goals for the CLPNBC and implemented infrastructure changes which supported strategic initiatives. After orienting the new Executive Director, I remained at the organization in a newly created position of Director, Policy & Practice. As the Director, Policy & Practice, I lead nursing initiatives for the organization and supported the continued operational improvements necessary. This role demonstrated ability to: • Lead all staff in the renewal of a positive work environment and creating supportive infrastructure. • Coordinate major practice projects to revise the Nurses (Licensed Practical) Regulation, Baseline Competencies for LPNs, Standards of Practice, and Practice Guidelines• Revise the Practical Nurse Education Recognition Program following the development of the Provincial Practical Nurse Curriculum• Establish the Regional Nursing Practice Advisor role in three areas that included orienting and coaching new staff, arranging remote access capability, and development of standardized reports.
