After more than 25 years of civic engagement, residential education, and leadership experience at six different universities and a passion for serving students, I have spent the past several years in a new phase of my higher education journey. While I thoroughly enjoyed working directly with students, the opportunity to work with and support alumni is exciting and I am very much enjoying this new chapter so far! Through my time on Semester at Sea and many other professional student affairs opportunities, I’ve been able to continuously challenge myself with regard to issues of privilege and oppression, difference and inclusion. I’ve shared in the work of my various institutions by serving as a course instructor, adviser of student groups, coach, committee member, student conduct officer, and always, advocate for students. More recently, the areas of cross-cultural service-learning and engaged citizenship have only served to fuel my interest in transformative learning opportunities for students. Opportunities to teach courses such as Perspectives on Sustainability, Disaster Impacts in Society, Residential Leadership, and post cross-cultural service-learning trip reflection classes have broadened my understanding of transformational education. I continue to increase my focus in the areas of service-learning, cross-cultural education, civic engagement, and social justice by placing them within the context of sustainability. Through completion of my doctorate in the Sustainability Education PhD program at Prescott College and professional opportunities to lead cross-cultural service-learning experiences, I continue to learn and grow. Nothing has been more rewarding for me than striving to ignite passion in students toward making positive change in the world.Currently, I am incorporating this education and career experience into my engagement practices and strategies as I work to support alumni and family members of the Willamette University Community.
