Through a partnership between UPS and Henry Street Settlement that began in 1968, I spent three weeks in an NYU dorm living and working on the Lower East Side. The mission of the three-week internships is to foster greater sensitivity to the social effects of poverty and for UPSers to share their mentoring and business skills with clients and staff in the Henry Street Settlement programs.I had the great honor to work at the Urban Family Center in the Baruch Houses. UFC provides apartment-style temporary shelter with on-site social services for homeless families with children. I worked in the job placement office and also created and conducted a basic financial planning course for residents.In addition to the hands-on work, we also visited numerous agencies and learned about innovative programs to enrich lives and enhance progress for Lower East residents and other New Yorkers.Henry Street Settlement was founded by Lilian Wald. She was born into a life of privilege but at a young age she devoted herself to immigrants on the Lower East Side, living and working among the industrial poor. She also founded the Visiting Nurses of New York.I left my job for three weeks to participate in this program. This investment is a testament to the high value that UPS places on giving back to the communities we serve.
