I write policy and provide guidance and training around key areas of research integrity, expanding our ability to nurture responsible research practices and to identify and deal with breaches of the standards.

I am currently a PhD student at The University of Edinburgh in Dr Steven Spoel's lab, working on a project entitled 'The chemical biology of the salicyic acid receptors NPR3 and NPR4'. This project is part funded by the BBSRC and partly by Bayer CropSciences, as it has potential industrial applications.

I spent three months working at Digital Science as a research assistant, working on a number of projects including the REF 2014 Impact Case Studies database (http://impact.ref.ac.uk/CaseStudies/). During this time I improved my skills with Excel, gained experience with data analysis in a non-academic setting, and learned some basic coding. I also gained insight into a working environment other than the laboratory setting.

I spent nine weeks working in Professor Dong Liu’s lab in Beijing. I was working to establish Brachypodium distachyon as a model plant for research into phosphate starvation, and define its responses to this stress. It was of particular interest to discover whether the responses are similar to those of A. thaliana, which this lab has worked with extensively in phosphate starvation responses. I spent ten weeks working in the Biology Department at York University with Professor Sue Hartley. I was working on a project looking at the distribution of silica in barley. This involved use of a wide range of techniques and equipment, and I became very familiar with standard techniques such as pipetting, microscopy, and use of statistics, generally through the program R. I was also lucky enough to be able to use an SEM linked to an X-ray fluorescence machine, giving me the opportunity to use… Show more I spent ten weeks working in the Biology Department at York University with Professor Sue Hartley. This involved use of a wide range of techniques and equipment, and I became very familiar with standard techniques such as pipetting, microscopy, and use of statistics, generally through the program R. I was also lucky enough to be able to use an SEM linked to an X-ray fluorescence machine, giving me the opportunity to use the fixing, drying, slicing and coating techniques necessary to prepare live plant samples for this form of microscopy.
