Through our original location at The Civic Theatre as well as our second space, 225 Hall Street (home of Reo’s Video and The Shoebox Theatre), Nelson Civic Theatre Society (NCTS) brings great ideas to our community and puts great ideas out into the world.My key accomplishments: Management of the company, supporting a staff of 17 and a volunteer team of more than 75 people.Collaboration with the board of directors to govern the society, and develop direction and policy.Development of two successive strategic plans and an annual work plan for the organization, including refining mission, vision and value statements.Establishment of many wide-reaching relationships in the local and regional community through my Nelson Star column, speaking engagements, and community events ranging from annual signature family events to collaborations with other groups to present films on current and resonating films.Creation of the Kootenay Screen-Based Industry (KSBI) concept, offering production, networking and employment opportunities for film projects in the Kootenays, and culminating in the launch of the first Kootenay Regional Film Commission (in collaboration with Kootenay Rockies Tourism and Creative BC).Co-creation of the Rural Arts Inclusion Lab (RAIL) with the Renascence Arts and Sustainability Society.Launch of several film festivals, including the STOODIS Indigenous Film Festival, creating a new inclusive annual event celebrating Indigenous storytelling.Raised more than $6 Million in individual, corporate and foundation gifts for operational, programmatic, capacity-building and capital projects.Representative of The Civic Theatre on the City of Nelson’s Cultural Development Committee, Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism Board, and Civic Centre tenants group; founding board member of the national Network of Independent Canadian Exhibitors (NICE), a professional association galvanizing independent cinemas across Canada and advocating for this presentation field.

The GVPTA is a charitable organization whose membership includes theatre companies, theatre makers and artists, and other organizations and individuals that support theatre. As Executive Director, I was responsible for all aspects of planning, programming, fundraising, marketing, financial management, general administration, and volunteer coordination. My key accomplishments: Established Metro Vancouver’s first ever Unified General Audition process in April 2012, now an annual program.Offered the Actors Symposium – a multi-day gathering addressing the business of acting.Overhauled the company’s membership program, redefining membership categories, and successfully growing our individual membership by 500% in three months, with continued growth thereafter.Launched the GVPTA Resident Blogger program, resulting in more than 150 posts in 2012-2014.Began a number of new and exciting programs including initiatives to expand opportunities for theatre artists and administrators, grow audiences, and support theatre companies in fulfilling their cultural mandates. Programs such as the UGA, Symposium on the Business of Acting, industry roundtables and audition salons were very well attended.

For five decades, The Cultch has offered programming in contemporary theatre, dance & music by local, national & international artists.As Director of Development, I was responsible for the development and implementation of a variety of fundraising programs and campaigns.My key accomplishments:Spearheaded the creation of a new fundraising department, including the implementation of administrative systems for ongoing campaigns and prospect cultivation and the development of a sophisticated database.Successfully expanded an individual donation program reporting a 150% increase in giving in its first year and notable annual increases thereafter, as well as the commencement of the Director’s Circle ($1,000+ Donors).Grew the ongoing fundraising drive significantly, adding a number of new foundation and corporate funders to the company’s contributed giving roster, totaling more than $500,000 in new cash and in-kind support. Composed a wide array of proposals to government, corporate, foundation and individual prospectsBroadened and deepened relationships with our board, in our constituency, and throughout the local community, resulting in numerous new cash and in-kind partnerships.Developed a dynamic print and online organizational fundraising presence on a very limited budget.Designed comprehensive administrative and record management systems, including the implementation and use of Raiser’s Edge and the launch of online giving.Planned and managed a variety of successful special events throughout each season, including cultivation events, recognition events, and a substantial formal gala fundraiser.Administered the annual Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award process, including management of the juried selection process for the recipient of this $60,000 award, and planning of the World Premiere performance party for the winner.

Founded the Apple Theatre Company, dedicated to enriching the lives of local Anguillian youth through theatre. Recruited membership, advisory committee, guest directors and production staff; produced and rehearsed seven full musical and non-musical productions between 1998 and 2008; cultivated funders, in-kind supporters and local partnership within the Education department, government and community; developed local theatre-going audience through media coverage and marketing of theatre program activities; held classes for members including vocal health, improvisation, playwriting, scene study and various workshops in areas of production administration; initiated a local mentorship program between young company members and adults in the community.My key accomplishments:With support from a Canadian NGO, launched and directed this program, involving a total of more than 500 local youth, and producing six full-length musical theatre productions, an original history play, and a micro-performance event.Contracted and supervised teams of directors and administrative personnel from Anguilla, Canada, England, and the United States.Beginning in 2000, undertook in-kind and cash fundraising for 100% of the program, averaging a value of $50,000/year secured from local (Caribbean) sources, largely from a distance (New York).Established a variety of adjunct activities for youth focusing on mentorship, writing, nutrition, and connecting with their community.Successfully marketed this program to audiences of all ages, using online, print and radio media.

Classic Stage Company (CSC) is a long-standing Off-Broadway theatre company that challenges the traditional perception of classic work by exploring and reimagining great stories across the world’s repertoire that illuminate our common humanity.As Director of Development, I was responsible for supervision and implementation of a full spectrum of development strategies, including an annual solicitation campaign to individuals; maintaining relationships with foundation, corporate and government funders; proposal and report writing; prospect research and funding campaign management; sponsorship negotiation; preparation and management of special events throughout the season; and planning of the theatre’s annual gala dinner and auction in tandem with board members and other staff. My key accomplishments:Maintained a grant calendar of more than 40 foundation, corporate and government funding bodies, raising over $400,000 each year.Sculpted a variety of proposals for innovative new programs, including the Young Company, an Off-Broadway opportunity for promising young directors, designers and actors to break into the professional theatre.Managed a number of special events, including opening night celebrations for each production throughout the year, board member cultivation events, a fundraiser with Broadway jazz singer Anne Hampton Calloway, and annual Gala events raising more than $200,000 each year, and featuring major corporate sponsors.Improved paper and technological administrative systems in the development department.Oversaw the creation of an annual appeal mail piece and administered its campaign, resulting in an income of more than $70,000 each season from individual donors.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national American organization for theatre, supports a thriving theatre ecology, serving over 700 Member Theatres and affiliate organizations and over 7,000 Individual Members.As Development Associate (2001–2003), I supported and implemented a range of development initiatives, including the proposal and report writing for the company’s corporate and state/city funders and management of these relationships; research and cultivation of new corporate prospects; initiation of a corporate sponsorship campaign for the 2003 National Conference; design and maintenance of a donor database and departmental filing system; departmental financial reconciliations; and other projects as assigned. Also conducted a research project for the International Theatre Institute, identifying funding opportunities for international study, exchange and collaboration.My key accomplishments: Launched a successful corporate sponsorship program for the 2003 National Conference.Created a complex and highly functional database for organizational and individual fundraising.Successfully added a number of new corporate sponsors to our fundraising roster.As the TCG National Conference Assistant (2000–2001), I supported the Conference Director in the organization of the 2001 Biennial TCG National Conference, held in Philadelphia, PA. Responsibilities included design and maintenance of registrant database; processing of registrations and individual participant requests and requirements; coordination of first-ever TCG Conference vendor fair; assisting in on-site conference coordination throughout the three-day event, and other tasks as assigned.My key accomplishments:Managed the inaugural vendor fair for the conference, hosting a wide variety of booths and representatives from theatre industry corporations.Organized conference performer and speaker travel.Designed and maintained a large database of attendees and vendors.
