About Eleanora Dyer
I'm a recent graduate from Vassar College with a personal and professional love of the outdoors. In college I majored in environmental studies, writing my senior thesis on urban farms, and was president of the Vassar Outing Club, leading hiking and biking trips in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Possibly paradoxically, I also love cities. I minored in urban studies, and this fall I moved to Brooklyn. I want to improve public encounters with the urban outdoors. As a design enthusiast I am interested in the physical form of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure and urban greenspaces. Equally important is the policy that underlies the creation of these resources and the programming that promotes their equitable access. My career must center serving my community and address the climate crisis. At Vassar I worked for the Office of Sustainability and the Environmental Studies Department. Working for the Office of Sustainability, I conducted research and supported logistics for campus sustainability initiatives. We developed long term climate neutrality plans, while also responding to the campus community's immediate needs. During the pandemic we implemented a reusable container program to mitigate the waste generated from grab-and-go dinning. That year we researched precedents at other universities and trialed a pilot program with several hundred students. Now there is a reusable container program available at several dinning locations on campus. As an intern for the Environmental Studies Department I supported students through the major declaration process and course registration by holding office hours and information sessions. In weekly meetings with the department's leadership I also provided a student perspective on the department's operations, assisted with annual events, and developed new programming. One such program was a well attended career panel featuring five alumni pursuing varied environmental careers, intended to support upperclassmen considering their next steps after college.Through my campus jobs and student leadership positions I developed strong communication and administrative skills. As the president of two student organizations, I wrote engaging weekly newsletters informing members of upcoming events and connecting them to our resources. Within our leadership teams, I facilitated logistical conversations about events and aspirational discussions of our mission and direction. I am dedicated to my community and my work, and I have strong leadership and academic skills to contribute to a socially and environmentally conscious organization.
