I am committed to pragmatic nature conservation, using best available evidence to support balanced decisions. Most recently I have been working on offshore renewables for The Wildlife Trusts, a leading UK environmental NGO, particularly focussing on impacts of underwater noise on marine mammals. I am also involved with our Marine Protected Area work, in particular engaging with decision making for management measures, including licensing of development and fishing. This has lead to a strong working knowledge of the European Habitats Directive & UK Offshore Habitats Regulations in particular. I believe that renewable energy developments are key in moving towards a low-carbon society, to tackle climate change & increase energy security. However, it is important that development, especially large scale, is done sensitively to the environment. It is clear that in the UK, an energy mix will be needed, with a balance of different technologies to ensure the best outcome for the environment as well as the consumer.I also work on Marine Spatial Planning, most recently on the English South Marine Plan. I believe a holistic and strategic approach to managing our seas is key to ensure their long term health, both for its intrinsic value and the ecosystem services which it provides.
