RapLeaf renamed LiveRamp, purchased by Axciom 2014.Engineer working on the development of core data collection, management, analysis, visualization, and distribution systems.Projects include:* Maintaining and expanding a system that performed direct searches and structured extraction on social websites, including a complete re-write to create a better underlying framework and remove most special cases. Carefully monitored that the number of requests each site received from us per day was tailored to the amount of traffic they were prepared to handle in the normal course of operations. [Ruby, lots of Regexps]* Building a highly scalable API that handles at least 100 million queries per day. Originally built in Ruby, and then migrated to Java. [Ruby, Java, Jetty, Cascading]* Working as part of a two-person team to write a new section for our core data processing pipeline to drastically improve the quality of data being returned by our API. This system uses weighted voting to compare the information for each entity from each data partner and determine which value we think is most correct. This benchmark gives us a better quantitative understanding of our data quality. I was the teaching assistant for 15-211, Data Structures and Algorithms for sophomores [Java], and 15-213, Introduction to Systems for juniors [C, x86 assembly], including responsibility for recitations, exam creation, office hours, automatic lab system administration, and the majority of course grading. I instituted and ran regular 4pm-midnight help sessions for students who needed assistance completing their labs.I also wrote and taught a course called Concepts in Algorithms, created as extra preparation for the senior students before the capstone 15-451 Algorithm Design and Implementation.

Developed an online multiplayer game to that challenges players to agree on a word to fill a blank in a sentence and the dictionary definition of that word. The data gathered from this game can be used to improve software that understands, writes, or translates human languages by providing an input set showing which definition of a word is being used in different example sentences. This project was in conjunction with Luis van Ahn's Games With a Purpose group (gwap.com), whose goal is to create activities for humans that result in large datasets for computers (like reCAPTCHA).[This project used Java, JDBC, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX patterns.]

Worked as a teaching assistant for 15-100, an introductory computer science course for non-majors. Responsibilities included leading a recitation and attending cluster hours to provide additional support for students on assignments. Allowed me to gain experience working with the professor who advised the CMU Qatar students I would be teaching that fall.[This course was taught in Java.]

Worked as a general assistant in the department. Tasks included office work, postering, maintenance of student files, and assisting professors.

Worked as a teaching assistant and part of the live-in Residence Life Staff for a program providing advanced college science opportunities for 100 exemplary Pennsylvania high school students. Responsibilities included closely assisting three research teams as they researched, wrote, and presented papers, advising a floor of students, assisting in the teaching and grading of several classes, holding constant office hours, and designing and running social activities.[We primarily taught Java and some Matlab.]

Worked on Project RADAR (http://www.radar.cs.cmu.edu/), a collection of projects looking at ways to use computers to improve workflows, scheduling, and communication for both groups and individuals. I was the initial researcher for a branch of the project trying to use Machine Learning to create a virtual personal assistant that could engage in email conversations about meeting scheduling on behalf of the user.This included:* Labeling a test corpus of emails.* Learning about machine learning algorithms and Java libraries that implemented them (particularly k-way classification with Boosted Decision Tree, Naive-Bayes, and Support Vector Machine (SVM)).* Choosing the most likely approaches to work, and designing, running, and recording experiments to test them.* Creating complete documentation of the project to date so that it could be handed off to other researchers.[Work on this project was done in Java.]

One of three interns for the Boothbay Harbor Opera House's inaugural season. I was involved in a wide range of activities including painting and rebuilding the theater space, marketing and ticket sales, reception work, costume maintenance, sound and lights, setting up and striking concerts, assisting with children's shows, backstage work, and minor stage roles.

Taught children ages 8+ to sail in 10' boats called turnabouts at the mouth of the Sheepscot River. Responsibilities included teaching skills from water safety, knots, and rowing through beginning racing, making sure everyone was safe while on the water, and planning weekly 'fun day' outings. (Summers June through August each year.)
