Velvet Ice is a project examining how variations in ice microstructure (and impurity content) affect large−scale ice flow patterns near ice sheet centers, and how this relationship is important for interpretation of climate history. Researchers used an acoustic televiewer to measure the shape and tilt of the borehole at West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide, and results are being compared to past years' data, laboratory data, and other WAIS Divide projects. Outreach responsibilities included maintaining the team blog and connecting researchers with high school classes via Skype and in person presentations.
