During my career, I have investigated the role of mitochondria in different pathological settings, from muscular dystrophies to chronic liver diseases, with the final objective of developing novel therapeutic strategies. In my current role at the RW-IoH (London), I lead studies aimed at creating innovative human immunocompetent experimental models to study liver diseases, in particular Alcohol-related Liver Disease, and liver cancer based on Precision Cut Tissue Slices. I have extensive experience in utilising these organotypic cultures to test novel drugs, including immunotherapies, anti-fibrotic and molecules targeting mitochondria. Finally, my research focuses on studying the (mal)adaptation of mitochondria, including mitochondrial morphology and dynamics, to stressors such as alcohol and the intriguing phenomenon of hepatic megamitochondria formation.As Chair of the ESBRA Early-career investigator & Communication committee, I am determined to advance scientific research on alcohol to tackle this global social and health issue. Our strategy involves boosting educational activities and creating more opportunities for European groups and ECI to collaborate in alcohol-related studies. We have established a periodic newsletter and a social media team to promote the work of ESBRA members, facilitate communication among the Society and foster a cooperative network.
