About Elena Kortmann
In order to meet the challenges of the 21st century, we need active nature conservation and environmental protection, be it due to the climate crisis or the extinction of species. Only a healthy planet offers us and future generations a home worth living in. That is why it is important to look for solutions instead of being discouraged by global environmental problems. To create a more sustainable world, the three pillars of sustainability (ecological, economic, social) must be considered. I have studied all three pillars in depth throughout my academic and professional career. During my bachelor studies in business administration, I specialized in sustainable economic models and development cooperation and learned about sustainability from a business perspective. Through my master's degree in Global Sustainability Science and various honorary positions, I have developed an understanding of sustainability from an environmental science perspective. At the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), I worked on the governmental perspective on sustainability. It is equally important to consider the local context for the environmental problem at hand and to be inspired by other countries and cultures at the same time. Through several years of experience abroad, e.g. in India, Australia, Benin and the USA, I have acquired intercultural competencies, reflected on my view of environmental issues and learned about new approaches to solutions outside the European context. I believe that active action is essential for sustainable social change. As Shakespeare said, "It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves." We can take the fate of our planet into our own hands and help shape a sustainable future. That is why I am involved in national species protection as a Species Conservation Coordinator at NABU e.V.

Species Conservation Coordinator
CurrentAs species conservation coordinator, I am committed to the national protection of (endangered) species. I create networks between full-time and voluntary staff, and between existing species conservation projects in the overall association. The goal is to strengthen the projects and increase the visibility of species conservation activities through targeted communication measures. In the long term, new projects are to be initiated to achieve or maintain a favorable conservation status of each targeted species.
Research Assistant Biosphere Reserves Institute
The project "HNEE Internationalization 2.0" aims to support the development of a new internationalization strategy at Eberswalde University. In cooperation with partner universities in Canada, South Africa and Germany, a network for practical sustainability cooperation was established. In an international, transdisciplinary team, I developed sustainability strategies with a focus on biodiversity, sustainable forestry and forest quality in UNESCO biosphere reserves. The project was part of the international research consortium TRANSECT.#SDG11: SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES#SDG13: CLIMATE ACTION#SDG15: LIFE ON LAND
Student Assistant At The Institute Of Ecology
As a student assistant, I participated in the research project "Sustainable protection of the endangered Colias Myrmidone: participation and integration of the Romanian population in an EU protected area management". The project aims to prevent the extinction of the butterfly Colias Myrmidone in three NATURA 2000 sites in Romania. The project is funded by the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). Primarily, I was responsible for scientific research and the preparation of technical literature for publications. As a co-author, I contributed to the paper "Mosaic landscapes provide conservation pockets for an endangered species: Colias myrmidone in Romania", which was published in Insect Conservation and Diversity on 23/12/2021. I also wrote the narrative of a short documentary film about C. myrmidone that was shot in Romania in May 2022 by the film production company Nautilusfilm. The film will be released soon. I also assisted in the creation of information panels, both in terms of content and graphics. Further, I prepared the interim reports and the final project report for UBA. #SDG13: CLIMATE ACTION #SDG15: LIFE ON LAND
Documentary Filmmaker "The Last Remaining Jaguar"
During my semester abroad at Arizona State University, USA, I made a film with fellow students about the last jaguar in the USA. In the documentary, we tell the story of the last known jaguar in the U.S., its return to Arizona, and its importance to the ecosystem. Through interviews with wildlife and jaguar experts and conservationists, we shed light on what needs to be done to support the return of endangered species, and especially top predators like jaguars, to the landscapes they once inhabited. The film won awards at both the BEA Festival of Media Arts and the NATAS Student Awards. It also aired on television on the local AZ PBS / Cronkite News station on January 11, 2022. #SDG15: LIFE ON LAND
Intern In The Department Of Health, Population Policy And Social Security
As an intern at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), I worked on projects related to security issues in fragile countries in the Sahel. I also worked on access to modern contraceptives and the evaluation of clinic partnerships in West Africa. Further, I supported the preparation of the BMZ co-organized conference "International Dialogue on Population and Sustainable Development" in Berlin, in which I also participated. I prepared position papers, draft responses to citizens' inquiries and from the parliamentary arena, and evaluated KfW project and funding applications. I prepared speeches, interview responses and press releases for the Federal Minister for Development and the Parliamentary State Secretary, as well as a daily press review and a weekly newsletter. Further, I was elected spokesperson for the interns and was thus the contact person for interns' concerns. Moreover, I organized a weekly field trip to various international organizations, associations and federal ministries in Bonn. #SDG3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING #SDG5: GENDER EQUALITY #SDG16: PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS #SDG17: PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS
