Bringing a complex system to life is magic. The only greater love for me is to see something we built change lives for the better, and to see the teams around me grow along the way. We're here to work on hard problems!I work across a deep and broad technology stack, including controlling physical systems, connecting them to the cloud, and interfacing them with people. My experience spans brain-computer interfaces; the world's first fully automated commercial kitchens; system design tools for heterogeneous distributed control systems; mobile robots for mechatronics education; and research in design methodology for cyber-physical systems.I thrive leading multidisciplinary technology teams. I'm an electrical engineer, a computer scientist, an empathetic leader, and a radical pragmatist. I live at the intersection of technology and product. I build technology platforms that scale and differentiate.I advocate Agile for both hardware and software, and encourage cross-functional teams organized around product capabilities. I measure individual, team and company-wide performance to shorten product development cycles and incrementally realize product vision. I strive for excellence, simplicity, and beautiful design.

Chief Technology OfficerBlackrock Neurotech May 2022 - Oct 2023Salt Lake City, Utah, UsWe're the forefront of brain-computer interfaces for the treatment of neurological disorders. I lead our technical vision and execution.Blackrock's talented scientists, engineers, and fabricators design and manufacture the most advanced brain-computer interfaces in use today. The Utah Electrode Array is used in over 90% of all chronically implanted BCIs in humans, with over 30k patient days and counting, and patients with over 8 years of continuous use. Patients with our BCI have controlled robotic prosthetics, vehicle simulators, powered wheelchairs, and mouse cursors -- all through thought alone. Our technology spans microfabrication of silicon electrodes; advanced electrode material R&D; neural signal acquisition and processing through ASIC and FPGAs; and machine learning to characterize the most nuanced intent and apply it in real-time contexts. Our mission is simple. We want people suffering from neurological disorders to walk, talk, see, hear, and feel again. -
Vice President Of EngineeringCreator Nov 2019 - May 2022San Francisco, Ca, UsI led R&D, prototyping and operation of Creator's innovative robotic kitchens and the apps that control them. I introduced Agile design methodology for mechatronics, and oversaw mechanical design, electronics, systems engineering, mechatronics software, apps, test, and fabrication. I worked closely with our product team to shape product roadmaps, and with engineering leaders to deliver our magic on spec and on time.I oversaw the complete product lifecycle of Creator's second generation robot, from concept through design, manufacturing and deployment. The design is complex (cooking is hard!) and we delivered.I developed processes and organizational structures to complement our culture of autonomy and independent thinking. I drove significant and measured improvements in product definition, engineering schedules, product lifecycles, and cultural values. I rolled up my sleeves and contributed directly to the product when needed, helpful, or fun! -
Director Of Software EngineeringCreator Nov 2014 - Nov 2019San Francisco, Ca, UsI led the embedded and software teams at Creator. They powered the world's first restaurant with a fully robotic kitchen. Our embedded team brought life to more than 20 microcontrollers and 350 sensors and actuators. Our app team connected robots with wearables, point-of-sale, and the Burger Creator app. -
Senior Product Manager, Embedded SystemsNational Instruments Mar 2011 - Nov 2014Austin , Texas, UsI drove product development and go-to-market strategy for NI's next generation of system design software. I worked closely with leadership across marketing and R&D on product definition, market sizing, and five-year release roadmaps. I worked with multidisciplinary teams to define minimum viable product and to launch revolutionary system design software. -
Product Manager, Embedded SystemsNational Instruments Feb 2010 - Mar 2011Austin , Texas, UsI led an innovation program based on Sloan's "Lead User" research. We discovered new and innovative product concepts by collaborating with top industry and academic experts. I shaped embedded product roadmaps, including NI myRIO, LabVIEW Communication Systems Design Suite, and LabVIEW System Designer. I sponsored research, co-authored academic papers, and wrote code for teaching laboratories and research proof-of-concepts. I advised company strategy in cyber-physical systems and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). -
Systems AdministratorSelf-Employed Jun 2004 - Jun 2008Founded an IT services company serving small businesses in Los Angeles. Managed networks, servers, workstations, mobile devices, and software services. I had awesome customers and great business partners and would have kept growing if grad school hadn't come along.

Software EngineerWestwords, Inc. Jul 1999 - Jun 2004Tech lead on MathMonarch, enterprise application software software used in the publishing of STEM textbooks. I wrote C++ algorithms to convert representations of mathematical equations between MathML, LaTeX and WWdoc; user interfaces in MFC; installers in InstallShield; and all end-user documentation. MathMonarch was used by publishing industry giants including McGraw-Hill, Pearson and Prentice Hall to automate paging and layout of scientific textbooks.Eventually Microsoft, Adobe and Quark developed better interoperability between authoring and publishing tools, and MathMonarch enjoyed a quiet sunset. The company has since dissolved, and we're proud to have helped publish STEM content for hundreds of textbooks used by hundreds of thousands of students.
