- As a graduate research assistant, I spent time studying a novel, solid-state process for the additive manufacturing of metals into large scale part preforms known as additive friction stir deposition (AFSD).- In this position, I was responsible for the programming, control, and operation of AFSD-capable CNC manufacturing equipment as well the development of a custom instrumentation system for measurement of in-process tool forces using National Instruments data acquisition hardware integrated with off-the-shelf strain-gauge based load cells; this project also required development of skillsets using traditional CNC manufacturing equipment (HAAS CNC mills)- In addition, I worked to communicate research discoveries relevant to this process through co-authorship of papers, working group discussion, and digital as well as poster-style presentations.

- As a research assistant working for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE), I have helped capture data on flow path behaviors as well as mechanical and non-newtonian fluid properties of various carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastics in frequent use with large scale additive manufacturing at the Oak Ridge National Lab's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility.- I have also recently aided lab work focused on characterizing fiber content, transition morphology, and microhardness of multi-material samples printed in ABS and CF-ABS with ORNL's Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) platform.- During my time as an undergraduate research assistant, I have had the opportunity to collect data for and co-author graduate and post-doctoral student theses and journal articles including "Measurement and Analysis of Pressure Profile for Nozzle Based Single Screw Extrusion Systems," etc.

- As a participant in the US Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship Program, I had the opportunity to work through the Oak Ridge National Lab's Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division- During my internship, I had the privilege of working with national lab scientists and engineers to research the effects of photosensitizer-aided photo-oxidation on biomolecular memory capacitive elements, or memcapacitors, which feature phospholipid bilayers capable of synthetically emulating synaptic functions of the human brain and are being developed for use in neuromorphic computing and learning applications.- In addition to my own research, I had the opportunity to attend weekly seminars to learn about current science being performed in all ORNL directorates, connect with scientists leading work those directorates, and to further develop my professional skills in scientific writing, communication of ideas and findings, and networking.
