About Eli Weaverdyck
I learned about the power of data science by studying ancient history. There were questions that no one could answer using the normal types of documentary and archaeological evidence, but I thought that there might be answers in the locations of archaeological sites, if I could figure out how to analyze them. I developed skills in Geographic Information Science and spatial analysis, learned statistics and R, and eventually created an innovative method of multivariate analysis to test hypotheses about the ancient economy. Along the way I became adept at explaining unfamiliar technical concepts and convincing stakeholders of my perspective. Having realized the power of data, I wanted to learn more, to do more. And I wanted to leave the past behind, to apply my skills in a setting that would have an impact in the present. Working as a GIS manager on archaeological projects, I saw how rewarding it was to collaborate with a team and see the immediate impact that my contributions had on my colleagues. I wanted to have that kind of impact every day. I knew that I had to fill out my skillset with industry-leading data science tools, so I took classes in Python and enrolled in WBS Coding School’s Data Science Bootcamp. At WBS, I have become proficient not only in Python and its most important data science libraries (Pandas, Seaborn, Sci-kit Learn, etc.), but in SQL and Tableau as well. Through business-focused projects, I’ve honed my skills in data cleaning and preprocessing, data visualization and storytelling, and A/B testing and experimentation. I’ve built automated, cloud-based data pipelines using web scraping and APIs and used machine learning to cluster music into playlists and predict housing prices. In addition to the technical skills, I’ve gotten used to working as part of a team in a fast-paced, Agile, project-based environment.I look forward to tackling difficult problems and making a positive impact. My years in academia gave me the ability to conceptualize abstract problems, break them down into concrete components, and find creative solutions. I'm also seasoned at communicating complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences in written and verbal form and to work both collaboratively across functions and independently. This background, when combined with my years of experience in GIS and my more recently acquired skills in coding, data analysis, and machine learning, will make me an invaluable member of your team.
