Started as a machinist, and worked in the packaging dept. when needed. A machinists responsibility is to manufacture a set number of metal parts within the required tolerances. I was selected to learn, and program the vision system that RPM uses to measure final products. The vision system uses a powerful lens with 300x zoom to focus on edges of metal parts. It then uses light to create a high level of contrast so the computer software can record the angle and measure it to the nearest .001 inch. My job was to create a template of each part by placing the part in a fixture, then adjusting the position of the lens and the angle/brightness of the light. I would then record each position in a sequence, creating a 3-D measurement of the part that is placed on the fixture. Although I enjoyed some aspects of the position, it wasn't what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life so I moved on.
