About Eli Chait

For the last 10+ years, I have focused on creating, building, and investing in products that help local businesses operate more efficiently and increase sales.I started Wholesail with 6 friends & former colleagues that I’ve worked with for the last 5-10 years across multiple companies. We spent nearly a year doing market research and customer discovery and identified a set of challenges related to how local businesses work with their suppliers. Previously I led the OpenTable product group responsible for growing OpenTable’s reservation availability. We built features to drive acquisition of new restaurants and increase reservation availability from existing restaurants. I joined OpenTable through the acquisition of Copilot, a company I led and co-founded with two other Wholesail founders. Copilot leveraged data to help restaurant operators increase revenue. We built a highly-engaging analytics product used by a few hundred restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. At OpenTable, we focused on scaling Copilot amongst OpenTable restaurants before shifting focus to building new revenue management features within OpenTable’s existing products. Before starting Copilot, I was an Associate at Alsop Louie Partners. I have remained an active angel investor with a focus on marketplaces and companies that serve local businesses. I grew up working in the restaurant business (which was the inspiration for Copilot) and remain connected to the industry through my involvement with the family restaurant business and my personal investments in the Tartine restaurant group (Tartine Bakery, Tartine Manufactory), Che Fico (Italian restaurant group in SF), and Mian (Sichuan noodles in the LA area).

    During my time at OpenTable I led a group of six product managers responsible for analytics, restaurant growth, legacy products, and the company’s flagship GuestCenter product.Notable accomplishments:Led a major iteration of the company's core reservation availability systems which allowed restaurants to maximize their limited seat inventory and accommodate more diners. The changes also enabled diners to book specific sections of the restaurant (for example the bar or patio). Less than a year after launch, this table category feature became the fastest growing new marketplace feature and contributed millions in incremental revenue for restaurant customers. Launched self-service on-boarding initiative and recruited the product and engineering team responsible for streamlining the on-boarding experience for restaurants.Developed the product, sales, and operations strategy to migrate 20,000 restaurants from the company's legacy Electronic Reservation Book to it’s cloud-based GuestCenter product and increased the monthly migration rate by 3X in one year. Integrated customer feedback and product engagement data into the product decision-making process. My team launched a new process to incorporate feedback from 40,000 restaurants and the 300+ employees that work with restaurants daily. We also developed a system to analyze product engagement on OpenTable’s legacy "Electronic Reservation Book" and determine which features were required for customers to adopt the new GuestCenter product.

    Copilot was a revenue management analytics company focused on helping restaurants increase revenue.The product delivered easy-to-use email and web dashboards that showed critical business metrics benchmarked against nearby businesses. Owners and managers used advanced reports to identify problems and make operational and marketing changes that drove hundreds of thousands in increased sales. Before being acquired by OpenTable, the company grew to several hundred restaurants and several thousand users. We were most proud of the high engagement: 70% of Copilot restaurants used the product every day, 40% upgraded to the advanced product, and 85% endorsed or referred other restaurants. The company raised $3m from Alsop Louie Partners and Upfront Ventures and was acquired by OpenTable in 2014 for $15m.
