About Elijah Smith

Clifton Strengths: Significance, Restorative, Woo, Communication, and Competition.I am a junior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, studying biochemistry within the highly competitive Haslam Leadership Scholars Program. My goal is to attend medical school after college and return to my rural home of East Tennessee to practice medicine. This and my love for science have led me to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BCMB) with a pre-health minor.My greatest enjoyments lie in engaging with, serving, and being a part of the UTK and Knoxville communities. I pursue this through my engagement in the Student Alumni Associates program at UTK, volunteering at Remote Area Medical, and the Leadership Knoxville Scholars program.Outside of these activities I enjoy spending my time playing guitar, hiking through the Appalachian Mountains, and working with my campus ministry Campus Outreach.

    Participated in 10 weeks of biochemical and bioanalytical research under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Giannone and researchers from ORNL's bioanalytical mass-spectrometry group with funding from the US Department of Energy's distinguished SULI research program. During this time I successfully produced results that reshaped the way my lab performed a specific procedure that will be used to study the gut microbiome of infants. These results were published to ORNL in the form of a research paper, presented in the DOE's IGNITE OFF competition, and made into a poster that was presented to fellow interns and ORNL staff.
