I had an internship at Vale's Canadian headquarters in Toronto the summer of my Sophomore year. I helped forecast the need for increased fiber optics cables and additional satellites required to provide internet coverage to our mines in Indonesia. Vale-Inco is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Brazilian mining company Vale. It produces nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, and silver. Prior to being purchased by CVRD (now Vale) in 2006, Inco was the world's second largest producer of nickel, and the third largest mining company of platinum group metals outside of South Africa and Russia. Brazilian mining company CVRD (now Vale) extended an all-cash offer to buy Inco for $18.9 billion in 2006.
