I provided trauma-informed, culturally humble behavioral health services to LGBTQ+ and HIV+ communities. I supported 10-12 Medi-Cal/Medicare clients ages 20-70 through weekly individual and group therapy. I worked through an anti-oppressive, queer/feminist, trauma-informed, and integrative lens and incorporate ACT, CBT, DBT, MI, Relational/Time-limited dynamic, Mindfulness-based, harm-reduction, and multicultural frameworks into sessions. I also provided crisis support, assessments, treatment planning, and referrals. To continue developing my skills, I presented and participated in monthly Cultural Humility, Gender Care, and Motivational Interviewing agency-wide workshops, weekly 3-hour group and individual supervision, and weekly didactics.

During this 10-week full-time internship with the ACLU National office, I worked on three main projects: -Advocacy National Institute evaluation where we investigated the Institute’s efficacy for youth activists ages 13-19: https://www.aclu.org/issues/aclu-advocacy-institute-School Dress Code Project where I analyzed and coded U.S. school clothing/grooming policies to identify gender and race discrimination, and-School Surveillance Project, where I facilitated 10 focus groups and analyzed data to find out high school students’ opinions on increasing surveillance in their schools.

I supported 20+ weekly participants through therapy, counseling, care ("case") management, advocacy, coordination of care, and referrals. I also facilitated a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) group of 12, and lead a research project about the efficacy of the group. I collaborated with a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, psychiatrists, and nurses, as well as with housing advocates and attorneys.

I got to work in a highly productive multidisciplinary UCSF-Stanford team, carry out and publish several ancillary studies for the PCORI- and NIH-funded PRIDE study, publish a lead-author article for Social Work Today, present findings at regional and national conferences, and advocate for the improvement of LGBTQ+ care and state-level policies

The Host Homes Program matched LGBTQIA+ transitional-age youth experiencing homelessness in San Francisco by matching them with local volunteer hosts for 3-12 months. After a match is made, young clients would attend weekly individual meetings with me to identify their short-term and long-term goals, systemic barriers, and interpersonal challenges and gradually strengthen their interpersonal and system-navigation skills. I supported clients' coordination of services, including gender-affirming care, legal and housing-related needs, and education/employment pursuits. By the end of the program, my clients achieved their goals of steady/permanent housing, financial stability, and higher education, and created stronger support networks. Additionally, I facilitated conversations between hosts and young participants regarding any challenges of living together they might be experiencing. I also conducted outreach to dozens of individuals and organizations on behalf of the Host Homes program and facilitated staff meetings and professional development workshops.

While working in this 90-day residential mental health program for people experiencing Serious Mental Illness (SMI), I created and facilitated daily psychoeducational, process, art/music therapy, and skills-based groups. I supported clients' wellness by providing milieu counseling and emotion regulation activities. With new clients (usually referred from Psychiatric Emergency Services), I conducted clinical intakes within 24 hours of their arrival and created collaborative Treatment Plans of Care (TPO) within the first week of treatment. Because the majority of clients experienced challenges with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), I also provided tailored skills training in individual settings. To support the professional development of 8 staff, I created and provided DEI training to improve inclusion and reduce bias in the provision of care. To keep track of it all, I utilized AVATAR to record and communicate clients' progress to a multidisciplinary team outside of the program.

I provided weekly counseling and case management to 40-50 HIV+ LGBTQIA+ and undocumented people with dual diagnoses experiencing homelessness. To support clients' medication adherence, I outreached Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels in Tenderloin daily where I provided harm reduction and mental health counseling. Working with a multidisciplinary team of 7, I also coordinated client care within and outside of the program and supported clients in their communications with medical staff.Because I joined SFCHC the day San Francisco went into Covid-related social distancing, I also facilitated LGBTQ+ online support groups at the beginning of the pandemic and developed social and community materials to adequately support mental health needs of SFCHC's younger clients ages 16-24.
