With our student team, we won the iGEM competition out of +180 teams. With 9 students and for 9 months full-time, we worked on our project !MPACT (info below). Furthermore, we were awarded best project in the therapeutics track and won the best Model, Integrated Human Practices, Presentation, and Supporting Entrepreneurship awards.I took on the role of secretary and oversaw our team's public affairs. I was involved in the external affairs, website, and wiki programming teams, as well as was the chair of one of our 2 public events and conducted experiments in the lab. Furthermore, I developed with another team member the business case for our project, (awarded best-supporting entrepreneurship), and I was part of the modeling team, (awarded best model). Doing multiple tasks outside of my defined role enabled me to integrate the various parts of our project into one, which I thoroughly enjoyed.!MPACT – Modular & Personalized Autoimmune Cell TherapyWorldwide 400 million people suffer from autoimmune diseases, of which 1 million are affected by the inflammatory disorder ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). Current therapies against AAV are based on unspecific immunosuppressive drugs causing burdensome side effects, high healthcare expenditures and workloads, while not excluding disease relapses. !MPACT is designed together with many stakeholders, a proof-of-concept was built in the laboratory, and a kinetic model was built to support future lab work. !MPACT's cells detect autoantibodies and subsequently produce an anti-inflammatory cytokine, which results in suppression of the autoimmune response. The activity of !MPACT depends on the autoantibody concentration, hence, adjusts to the disease activity, leading to fewer side effects than current therapies, preventing relapses, and reducing healthcare expenditures and workloads.
