About Elisabeth Downey
The new chemistries developed today will shape the future, which is why I love working with scientists and engineers to help protect their inventions, and am particularly passionate about innovation in the cleantech sector. My expertise is within chemistry, nanoscience, advanced materials, process chemistry and process scale-up. Understanding the relationship between the chemical and physical properties of materials is key to converting scientific discovers into real world. My career thus far has been purposefully international; I have worked in the UK, Australia, China and Denmark, and I hope to keep broadening my horizons.

Patent Attorney Trainee, Chemistry
Postdoctoral Researcher
Research and project management:Management of the groups research projects including masters and PhD student projects and an international collaboration between Denmark and China funded by the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research. This included long periods of time managing project remotely from China.Set-up of new lab space:Responsible for setting up a new laboratory for the Molecular Electronics research group including decisions about equipment, purchases (budgeting) and hardware (gas/water pipelines). Co-course responsible:15-ECTS Masters level course based in China. Responsibility for content planning, daily teaching, assignment setting and grading. As well as this, I continued my the research from my PhD project in molecular electronics and molecule-metal interfaces.
Phd Student
My PhD research has a focus on producing and measuring conductive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold substrates, with graphene-derivatives as top-contacts. The focus was on finding new and ‘unknown’ molecules for applications in next generation electronics with a focus on understanding the electrical properties at molecule-conductor interfaces. This experimental project included a broad range of materials and electronic analysis techniques including XPS, AFM, TEM, electrochemistry, UVvis, solid-state electronic measurements (probe station).
Visiting Phd Student
Assistant Applications Scientist/Technical Sales Support - Uk Start Up
My responsibilities included processing and optimising the parameters for coating both new and existing customer samples with P2i's trademark waterproof nanocoating. I would test the samples to ensure that all functionality and physical properties were maintained after treatment. The coating properties were also tested in order to ensure that the correct degree of water repellency was achieved as well as some of the other physical properties e.g abrasion resistance or the coating thickness and uniformity. I would then write a project report for each customer with all testing and experimentation result.Further responsibilities included providing technical sales support to both other team members and to customers. This consisted of either advising on the quantity and type of samples that were required for initial trials or giving further explanations for results seen from customer in-house testing. I was also called upon to give advice on problems encountered on customer sites using P2i's technology.
Masters Student
During my final year at University, I carried out my Masters project in the Frank Marken Group at the University of Bath, with a project entitled 'One-step synthesis of photoactive vanadium oxide based electrode materials'The project involved synthesising thin films of V2O5 based materials in order to create electrodes. The electrodes were then tested for electrochemical and photoelectrochemical activity, as well as analysing the physical structure of the films deposited. Over the course of the project, numerous experiments were carried out to assess the effect of different deposition methods, impregnation of the films with different metals and conducting analysis with different light sources (to initiate photoactivity). The project was assessed on the quality of the thesis written, a presentation of the findings, a oral exam and a 'lab conduct' grade given by the project supervisor. Overall, I achieved a First Class grade for the project.
Visiting International Research Student
During my time at UniSA, I worked on a project to determine the effect of deposition paratmeters on the structure and physical properties of sputtered Cr coatings on plastic substrates. I have the responsibility of deciding which samples were to be produced, which testing was necessary to carry out. From sample preparation to testing and analysis, all work was carried out by me and others in the team. This allowed for a very in-depth knowledge of the project and it was therefore easier to decide which experiment to conduct next. The project was carried out as part of a collaboration with SMR Automotive and on numerous occasions I presented our findings to project members from industry with varying degrees of understanding of the processes involved.
