I have been appointed to the board by Abelia, an association within NHO (The Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise). I served as a deputy member of the board from 2019 to 2022, and a regular member as well as deputy chair of the board since 2022.

Digital Norway is a non-profit organization established in 2017 by a group of the largest companies in Norway, with public support. I represented DNV on the board and in the process of establishing the organization, and served as vice chairman. The goal of Digital Norway is to increase the knowledge and use of digital technology amongst Norwegian companies.

DNV GL Digital Solutions was established as a new Business Area January 1, 2018, comprising DNV GL combined offering of digital services. This includes a market leading software portfolio, cyber security services, Veracity open data platform and digital consulting services and generated a revenue of 900 MNOK in 2018, predominately within maritime industries and ship management, energy infrastructure, renewable energy and oil & gas industries.

DNV GL Oil & Gas was a global organization with operations in 36 countries, comprising more than 4000 employees and a revenue of 6.200 MNOK in 2014. DNV GL Oil & Gas offered a broad portfolio of technical assurance and advisory services to onshore and offshore oil and gas markets. The unique service offering was supported by 12 hubs of expertise, and 18 laboratories worldwide, several of these holding world leading and unique industry positions. Main achievements as CEO were to merge the operations and organizations from legacy DNV and GL while simultaneously aligning to a rapidly changing market. Results were achieved through customer centricity, investments in a renewed service offering and cost savings through organizational restructuring and downsizing. The effects of these efforts were demonstrated by growing market shares, enhanced efficiency and profitable operations.

The CTO was part of the Executive Council for DNV GL Group. Achievements in this role included development of IT / digitalization strategy and governance in the newly merged DNV GL group as well as development and implementation of group-wide structure and focus areas for research and innovation.

DNV Americas and Sub Saharan Africa comprised approximately 1000 people in 14 countries and the organization offered the complete service portfolio of DNV in maritime, oil and gas and renewable energy markets with an annual revenue of around 1.100 MNOK. The position was based in Houston, Texas and was part of DNV’s Executive Board. Results included signification operational efficiency enhancements as well as increased market share, profitability, impact and employee attraction in key markets. Significant growth was achieved in USA, Brazil and Canada across all target industries. Tørstad was also responsible for DNV’s efforts related to the Macondo accident, including undertaking the failure investigation on behalf of US authorities. In addition to substantial organic growth in all market, we concluded acquisition of solar energy consulting company BEW Engineering in California.

Responsibel for the global operation of DNV's engagements in Cleaner Energy and Utilities. This includes power generation and transmission in general, with emphasis on renewable energy. DNV has specific focus on all aspects of wind energy generation, the whole value chain related to carbon capture and storage and safe energy generation from nuclear power. Key achievements include developing DNV into a world leading consulting and certification company within both solar and wind energy. This included establishment of new operations globally and acquisition of Global Energy Concepts, a major wind energy consulting company in USA. Further, playing a key role in EU’s ambitious CCS projects and development of industry wide best practises for CO2 capture, transportation and storage.

CSM for Norsk Hydro and Norske Shell

The Department delivered services to the international oil&gas industry in all phases of projects – from early phase to in-service. Approximately 20% of the revenue was generated from Research & Development projects, 25% from early phase consulting services, including qualification of new technology and laboratory testing, 25% from verification and certification work and 30% from consulting services in the in-service phase, including failure investigations.

The section delivers services mainly to the oil and gas market, but works also within the maritime sector, transportation and landbased industry. Typical services are Qualification of technology, R & D work, Verification and Fitness for service assessments. The position included responsibility for DNV laboratories and facilities for structural and large scale testing. Acted as Project Sponsor in failure analyses and fitness for purpose assessments of the Tune and Åsgard 13%Cr steel pipelines.
