As a graduating sociology major at UCLA and incoming Masters of Library Information and Science student, community centered events have become a big part of my personal and academic life. I hope to continue this community centered approach to life as I move forward into my professional life; aiming to become a public librarian. When I was a child, I spent many hours at my local public library, because of the amazing assortment of free books and DVDs, but also as a place to connect to other children and bond with my family. As i continued on in my academic life, I found that the library became an increasing part of my life. Not only did I utilize academic libraries as a quiet refuge for study, but I also found public libraries as a center for vast resources that I could utilize and recommend to others in my volunteer life. I became familiar with the language resources at my public library, the opportunities for job searches and access to free internet and computers, as well as the community events that would take place there. As someone with this deep respect for libraries, I hope to apply my customer service and people skills to cultivate a welcoming environment for all in our public libraries. Because of my experiences working in customer service and volunteering with the community, I am confident that I can contribute to our wonderful public library system and assist all members of our community in recognizing that this space is made for them.
