I used to believe that whatever career paid the bills was what ultimately needed to fulfill us. Not only that, I believed that there were a very limited number of ways that a person could use their training as a physician. With time, I realized that my diverse interests could not be adequately sated by a single job, and I decided to experiment with what it could look like to have a life that blended many connections and callings.Now I find incredible stimulation and a fulfilling personal balance by engaging in a wide variety of interests: some paid and some not. I get to engage many different skills and passions by:▪️Serving rural communities as a locum tenens physician in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including surgical obstetrics.▪️Volunteering regularly at a free clinic, bringing quality care to primarily undocumented immigrants who might not otherwise have access.▪️Serving as a forensic medical evaluator for asylum applicants with the Evaluation Alliance for Human Rights.▪️Offering expert witness services to continue promoting the provision of excellent medical care▪️Blending my love of the outdoors with serving others by working with the local search and rescue team.▪️Continuing to explore the field of the intersection of climate change, migration, and public health.▪️Writing and speaking about my journey doing something differentMy experience building this portfolio career has shown me that just because we can fit into a position doesn't mean that it allows us to grow to our greatest potential, and when we are stifled, we suffer. It's okay to change our mind about what we thought we were "supposed" to do when we discover it doesn't actually fit us and our talents. I believe that when we are able to use the fullest extent of our gifts, both we AND the world benefit.
