Research SubjectAltitudeomics Jan 2012 - Sep 2012I was 1 of 21 young, healthy, sea-level residents in Eugene OR that was recruited for an altitude study while attending college at the University of Oregon. There was a screening process that included physical examinations and the U.S. Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT, push-ups, sit-ups, and a 3.2-km run) were performed to characterize our health and fitness status. We were chosen out of hundreds being screened because of our ability to pass these series of tests. For a few months, I participated in baseline testing in a UO Human Physiology lab and in the summer of 2012 spent a month traveling to varying altitudes in Bolivia and spending a couple weeks on Mt. Chacaltaya at 17,700 ft. for testing.This experience challenged me in ways I could never imagine. Physically, mentally and emotionally. I built friendships with other subjects and researchers from around the world. During the study, I endured altitude sickness, cold temperatures, loss of muscle but I also walked away with more confidence to tackle challenges, persevere, demonstrate patience, kindness, and the willingness to push through difficult circumstances. From then on, I've continued to have a passion for the mountains, the outdoors, meeting like-minded people, and exploring what other cultures and parts of the world have to offer.
