About Elise Saxon

Hi! I'm a data engineer! And I'm pretty good at it, partially because of my work experience and computer science education, but also because I love working through the challenges that come with data. I also have a serious drive to see things through (keep reading).* I really like what I do. Writing ETL/ELT pipelines is fun for me. Crafting complex database queries (SQL and noSQL) is my jam. Collaborating with others to design data solutions is a fun social activity.* If I don't know how to do something right now, it won't be long before I do. I'm not one to shy away from new experiences, especially at work. When I'm unfamiliar, I ask for help. I learn best by getting my hands dirty, so you'll probably never find me bored.* I'm an introvert who wants to be your friend. I care as much about contributing to a healthy and diverse community of people as I do about engineering. So if there are ERGs or affinity groups, I will be there. * I graduated in the top of my class with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (and a Bachelor's in Spanish - I'm fluent). So I'm not just a super strong coder, but I've also studied algorithms, data structures, networking, databases, and computer systems. And I just love learning.* I am a runner. I've been running since I was 5. I attribute my drive to see things through to spending my life committed to this intense physical activity where success comes from one's unwillingness to give up. An example? My run streak. I've been running every single day since August 2021.

Senior Data Engineer

British Columbia, Canada

I created and maintained over 20 ETL pipelines ingesting data into the data platform from sources like Salesforce, Marketo, LinkedIn, Optimizely, BambooHR, Statuspage, and Netsuite. Creating these pipelines gave me more experience with carefully handling PII and People data, writing and fulfilling SLAs, and working across teams to design solutions for complex data situations. In addition to building and refactoring data pipelines, I played a key role in migrating the Data Platform's data warehouse from Redshift to Databricks. I helped design a plan for performing the migration of existing data and ETLs, and I took the lead on creating Airflow operators to process data for both Redshift and Databricks.I also led the Data Platform's adoption of Fivetran to ingest data into the datalake and data warehouse. This made data ingestion easier by eliminating the need for custom ingestion code for over 10 data sources.I worked on-call shifts, where I answered internal customers' data questions, investigated data anomalies, and fixed errors in critical pipelines at all hours of the day and night.

Data Systems Engineer Ii

Greater Seattle Area

As a Data Systems Engineer II I performed both data engineering and data science work. As an engineer, I set up data warehouses, created ETL pipelines, and wrangled data for 19 different projects. As a data scientist, I created and trained deep learning models using PyTorch for image classification, deep reinforcement learning, and natural language processing. I have experience with the entire lifecycle of data, from ingestion to ETL to warehousing to using it for machine learning and modelling. I led the software engineering and data engineering teams for 3 projects, as well as mentored 3 junior engineers and hosted 6 interns.I managed a team of 6 engineers and data scientists in delivering a production-level ETL and text analytics pipeline for biosurveillance, which processes hundreds of thousands of streamed news articles per day. This specific project was acknowledged in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics Bulletin for project's contribution to COVID-19 research. I have 2 copyrights for work I did at PNNL. One copyright is for a data collection system I designed and implemented, which (with the consent of the user) tracks mouse movements and clicks on a computer screen. The other copyright is for a website and database that I created for deep underground neutrino research (www.radiopurity.org).While at PNNL I was nominated to attend SEDP (Scientist and Engineer Development Program), an educational bootcamp for future leaders at PNNL. At the bootcamp, I strengthened my leadership, communication, and team management skills.Co-authored 4 R&D project proposals, one of which was awarded $750K for 3 years of work.Co-authored a paper published in JMIR (Journal for Medical Internet Research). My work on this paper addressed the data pipeline I created to process text data for COVID-19 research.Interviewed 30+ people for software engineer and data scientist positions.
