Appointed by the Houston Commission on Disabilities and confirmed by the Mayor of the City of Houston to advise and make recommendations to the mayor, City Council, department directors, and the individual designated by the mayor to head the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

I was recruited from the joint MBA/MHA program at the University of Houston Clear Lake for a 2-year post-graduate fellowship at The University of Virginia Medical Center under the mentorship of the Medical Center CEO. I regard this as a paradigm shift in my career path.I participated in strategic clinical and operational projects with significant experience in public policy at the local, regional and national levels. In this role I successfully navigated the challenge of moving beyond clinical and academic roles into the board room, bringing a unique translational perspective to projects and operations combined with a distinctive ability to align perspectives across stakeholder groups to attain ambitious goals. I developed comprehensive leadership abilities in a multifaceted post-graduate fellowship role including attending a speechwriters’ conference with a select group of seasoned professionals for company CEOs, elected officials and college presidents and developing proposals for certificate of need initiatives.Among my accomplishments in this role were sharing insights and contributing to public policy in a role with expansive implications, including collaborating with members of the Virginia General Assembly and staff of the US Congress in Washington, DC with exposure to the NIH and ACGME.The team and I improved quality of care for underserved populations by orchestrating multiple clinics for the Remote Area Medical Clinic (RAM), providing free health care for 3,000 indigent patients annually at a vacant fairground. I rapidly acquired the ability to forge rich relationships with diverse stakeholder groups and elevate communication across patients, families, physicians, nurses, financial managers, hospital administrators, legislators, senior leaders and more.
