Dr. Gard has served on the Mars Research Review Board (MRRB) for approximately seven years as a consultant, and brings her service with credentials in veterinary medicine, laboratory animal medicine, human-based research, and regulatory medicine related to science policy and animal welfare, as well as clinical practice.Dr. Gard has also:• Served as ad hoc member and subsequently elected member of the Council for the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC-I), for 13 years, during which time she performed site visits for the accreditation of more than 40 academic, industrial, and non-profit institutions to verify the highest standards of animal care.• Worked in the Office for Science Policy in the Office for Laboratory Animal Welfare of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to evaluate the compliance of national and international sites with federal guidelines.• Acted as a consultant to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the Clinical Center of the NIH, the University of Maryland, Salisbury University, the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), and private industry.As a researcher, Dr. Gard has:• Authored or co-authored over 40 publications and abstracts in the fields of clinical cases, animal models of heart disease, animal models of human infectious disease, cancer, and immunology.• Worked in Pavia, Italy as the United States representative for an international project to develop animal models of human HIV.• Served as Principal Investigator (PI) on an NIH-funded program that gathered national data on the use of animal species, numbers of animals, animal use, personnel, cost analysis and rate setting, and infrastructure conditions of all institutions receiving federal award money.• Was selected for study sections for the NIH as a reviewer to score contract and grant proposals for NIH funding awards.
