The classroom makes a tough situation much worse for high school students.Overwhelmed students are so anxious about college that they don't learn how to become someone.Seeing this in 2016, I transformed the classroom into a laboratory research program for eight 12th graders since "experience is the best teacher."I didn't know if putting them in "grad school" would be successful. I had limited classroom teaching experience from my time pursuing a PhD in chemistry at Caltech years before. And my most recent teaching experience in 2016 was teaching Cub Scouts.During the next 8 years of teaching laboratory research, I watched my students go to:StanfordYaleCornellUC BerkeleyUCLADukeJohns HopkinsUC San DiegoNYUUSCand many other top 75 colleges. Once there, they thrived -- because our work taught them how to embrace uncertainty and to understand that failure and success are highly intertwined. Some continued on to grad school at:HarvardStanfordGeorgetownPurdueUniversity of New Hampshireand other great programs.More importantly, today most are rooted in purpose regardless of their academic degrees. But working with a handful of students each year was not enough to address the career anxiety problem at scale. And that anxiety was only intensifying for the students I couldn't reach.Teaching remotely during the pandemic was the turning point. Seeing my students thrive in spite of not being in-person with them was eye-opening.As we emerged from the pandemic isolation, media entrepreneur Ellen Yin inspired me to begin teaching students 1:1 and in small groups via Zoom.I never looked back. I began teaching students 1:1 across different time zones -- from ages 14 to 24.My goal is to help 5,000 students feel confident and directed in their career paths.Experience -- in the form of projects and internships -- is the must-have teacher for young people today. It's the only way to become "life-ready" right now.--> REACH ME here on LI or via email (DrLiz@PassionProjects.net) to talk about your project and internship ideas.
