I specialise in understanding, communicating and facilitating human-nature connection. As an interdisciplinary researcher, I make sense of complex environmental issues using classic ethnographic research methods (interviews, surveys, and participant observation), literature and policy analysis. As environmental communicator, I use a variety of mediums to engage with diverse audiences – writing, teaching, arts and events production, and the curation of immersive experiences. My experience lies in:• water governance and water management, from policy and governance through to public trust and participatory research (urban and rural)• environmentalism, environmental movements and sustainable development, conservation, ecology and forest conservation practice• regenerative agriculture, permaculture and food politics• indigenous knowledge & healing and ethnobotany• land reform, land rights and land restitution• policy analysis (with a focus on South African environmental, water, housing and municipal policy)• teachingI have worked in the academic and NPO spaces on community-led water management in urban slums/informal settlements, greywater management, water governance, public trust, permaculture, teacher training, environmental education, course co-ordination and office management. As writer and editor, I have worked in a range of capacities – as academic tutor, grant and blog writer, web copy writer, research reports and policy recommendations, and a range of pro bono offerings for academics and activists. I excel at guiding students and emerging writers in their writing process. In addition, I produce events and art installations that incorporate the themes of human-nature connection, ecology and environmentalism as effective strategies for communicating environmental issues and effecting change.I have travelled from the Amazon to the Andes, and the Western Ghats to the Himalayas, sitting with curanderos, sadhus, pajes and sangomas. I received my PhD in environmental anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand as a Carnegie Fellow with the Global Change and Sustainability Research Institute. My undergraduate studies were conducted at the University of Cape Town, where I received scholarships from the Institute of Plant Conservation and the Water Research Commission, and undertook research with interdisciplinary teams from botany, civil engineering, environmental science and social anthropology.

Ecological ArtistFreelance Jul 2014 - PresentCape Town, Western Cape, South AfricaAs ecological artist, I work with upcycled and natural materials to produce art works that speak of human-nature relationships and inspire us to think more deeply about how we impact the natural world, and its effect on us. Drawing on my experience with bamboo with Bamboo U and Ibuku in Bali, Bamboo DNA in South Africa and in Costa Rica, and upcycled lighting at Boom Festival in Portugal, I have developed large and small-scale art installations that have featured in a number of South African arts and music festivals. These include:2019 International Public Arts Festival (IPAF), Origin, Bazique, Vortex and Plastic Free Mzansi with the Beach Co-op. I have also offered a workshop in basic bamboo design with Let It Grow Foundation. Using ecologically-friendly materials, I summon beings of the waters – creatures, deities and mythological beasts – that speak of the deep relationships, spiritual beliefs, rituals, ceremonies, songs and practices, and humanity’s inextricable connection with water. My art forms are informed by my own visions and the universal stories of water beings that emerge in a number of indigenous knowledge traditions around the world. At the same time as exploring deep-seated mythologies surrounding universal themes of water, my art works promote the use of sustainable materials and inspire critical thought about the impacts of plastic waste on our oceans and water courses – making use of materials that once contained water and later become threats to the health of water bodies.

Bamboo Propagation, Production And DesignSelf-Employed 1999 - PresentSouth AfricaSince 1999 I have worked with bamboo. I started learning about agroforestry, propagation, nursery management and harvesting together with light construction at Finca Isla del Cielo in Costa Rica. I maintained an interest ever since, and in 2017 attended the Bamboo U construction course with Orin and Elora Hardy. With these skills, I returned to South Africa and networked with farmers and producers on a trip to learn about bamboo in my country. I went on to connect with local farmers to access existing bamboo resources, and went on to single-handedly harvest and carry out a test for processing the bamboo using the vertical soak diffusion method developed by Linda Garland's Environmental Bamboo Services. From there, I designed and built a large-scale sculpture that was a hybrid between a bamboo structure and a veneer of upcycled plastics to create a giant dragon head for Bazique Festival. Since then, I assisted the World Bamboo Organisation to organise their conference and workshop papers. In 2022 I was commissioned to offer a workshop in the fundamentas of bamboo skills and construction with Let It Grow Foundation in Johannesburg.

Grant WriterBaz-Art Jun 2021 - Dec 2022City Of Cape Town, Western Cape, South AfricaWriting of grant applications for public art projects, including the International Public Arts Festival and other projects.Amongst the successful applications were for the BASA Awards, British Council, and City of Cape Town funding. The work entailed co-ordinating with art directors and company directors on suitable projects, identification of funding opportunities, screening of opportunities for eligibility and writing the applications. Identifying funding calls and aligning these with NPO project objectives for funding eligibility was crucial, together with co-ordination around clear role responsibilities through the office chain-of-command. This required a clear understanding of the NPO project goals, and its overall mission and objectives. -
