About Elizabeth Lyons-Beal

Currently an M.A. English Literatures student at San Francisco State University, I have worn several hats throughout my academic and professional career. However, the experiences that are most pertinent to my long-term career goals are those that have helped me learn and grow as an educator. I have had the good fortune to teach in many different environments, each with its own unique sets of rewards and challenges. As an English language assistant in France for the 2016-2017 academic year, I planned lessons designed to help foster English language acquisition among high school students. After returning to the States, I began seasonal employment as a reading and study skills instructor with the Institute of Reading Development over the summer and fall of 2017, and again in the summers of 2018 and 2021. I've spent much of my time as a graduate student working as an English teacher for C2 Education, a position I held for over two years. In this role, I taught the fundamentals of writing, grammar, and literary analysis at grade appropriate levels. Additionally, I helped students with test preparation, ensuring their success with standardized entrance and proficiency exams. I was the resident ELA/Social Studies teacher at a small private school during the 2020-2021 academic year, during which time I gained valuable experience in lesson planning and classroom management. After earning certification in the teaching of post-secondary reading and composition in 2021, I had the opportunity to teach a section of first-year integrated reading and writing at San Francisco State University. In this course, I encouraged students to develop and embrace their own academic voices. Through scaffolded reading and writing assignments, I invited students to think critically about our theme--community and identity--and how it related to them and the world at large. I took care to apply equitable and antiracist pedagogy in the classroom.I approach every teaching opportunity with enthusiasm and good humor, and I take pride in my ability to encourage productive participation in students of all ages, creating space for them to engage with material in ways that are personally meaningful and intellectually stimulating.

Middle School Science Teacher

Current

Berkeley, California, United States

I have taken the lead on developing the Madeleine’s middle school science program, creating new lessons and organizing three new and enriching field trips. I work with over 100 students in grades 6-8 to help them develop their knowledge of Earth, life, and physical sciences. Through lectures and hands-on labs, I teach fundamental scientific content, concepts and methods in an engaging and grade-appropriate way.

Aug 2023 - Present

Academic Interventionist

Piedmont, California, United States

In this role, I work with small groups of K-8th grade learners using Catapult’s dynamic and research-based literacy intervention curriculum. I support students as they apply new skills in all content areas with increasing levels of independence, using the model of “I Do, We Do, Two Do, You Do” for a gradual release of responsibility. With the support of Catapult, I also spearheaded a robust after-school tutoring program designed to accelerate students’ academic and social emotional development in the wake of the learning disruption caused by COVID-19.

Dec 2022 - Aug 2023

Transcriber

I provide transcriptions to improve the accessibility of a popular youtube channel, covering topics ranging from gender expression and mental health to taste tests and cooking competitions.

Jan 2022 - Feb 2023

Graduate Teaching Assistant

San Francisco, California, United States

I taught a section of first-year integrated reading and writing at San Francisco State University during the Fall 2021 semester. My goal for this course was to encourage new students to develop their own voices within the world of academia--a landscape that has historically been exclusive of those with non-dominant literacies--while we explored the class theme of community and identity. Students used reading annotations and free-writes as launching points for “Think-Pair-Share” discussions, and those discussions served as resources from which students could draw inspiration for their writing. This class foregrounded collaborative reading, writing and revision processes, and I employed a grading contract as a form of evaluative, non-rank-based assessment. My aim in doing so was to cultivate an equitable, anti-racist learning environment.
