Lead Facilitator
In this capacity, I supervised a team of 7 Child and Family Team Facilitators in North County San Diego. We mediate and facilitate Child and Family Team Meetings (CFTs). I worked alongside San Diego County Child Welfare Services, Behavioral Health Services, and Probation. I supervised the facilitator's caseload of referrals and provide support using critical thinking and consistent communication to help problem solve. This was done using restorative justice practices and conflict resolution skills. As a Lead Facilitator, I communicated updated San Diego County policies, shadow their CFT Meetings and give feedback regarding their facilitation skills, and assure the team is fully supported in every capacity. As a supervisor, I led each facilitator to explore their facilitation skills and methods and provide consistent feedback through 1:1 supervision meetings and yearly evaluations. I encouraged an open-door policy where facilitators also offer feedback to me and the CFT Program. Furthermore, I work alongside the other Lead Facilitators to provide monthly trainings to our facilitators, training for new hires, and prepared for CFT presentations and conferences. Additionally, I supported monitoring our data methodologies and assisted in evaluating our CFT data analysis. This included analyzing our current methodologies that comply with San Diego County policy and brainstorming different methods to meet our contractual obligations. Lastly, I identified and managed all team and office issues. This included communicating and working directly with other departments to ensure our office procedures meet Fred Finch’s standards.
Principal Investigator
In this capacity, I collected information regarding non-profit/ non-governmental organizations in the United States and Mexico that focus on violence prevention/intervention at the community level. The identified organizations worked primarily with male youths, who were at higher risk of joining a gang or cartel. After identifying the organizations, I did extensive and detailed research on the community-based and non-profit organizations. I analyzed the methodologies and theory of change used by these CBOs and non-profit organizations and composed detailed questions for interviews. Additionally, I contacted the organizations and set up interviews with the directors and staff members. I traveled between the cities of San Diego, CA and Culiacan, Mexico to gather information and conduct interviews. I conducted long-form partially scripted interviews in English and in Spanish. Furthermore, I attended events that provided greater insight into the work of the organizations. These included: a community clean-up to prevent the spread of the mosquito Dengue, participating in a summer program with youth in a violent town in Culiacan, and in summer activities with youth in San Diego. At these events, I interviewed the youth and community members to gain further information and build rapport for the purpose of the project. I created reports that assessed the relative effectiveness and highlighted the best practices of the organizations. Lastly, I build rapport between the organizations and the Trans-Border Institute.
