I have completed a course in Scientific Computing Skills which contributed 12.5% toward my overall mark for the second year. Learnt the computing language Python, using it to plot experimental data and to gain insight into physical phenomena. 30% of the mark for this course was for a project in which I created a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to communicate the concept of 'planetary orbits' within our solar system. I worked with a tem of three other students on a project that contributed 33.3% to my mark for a laboratory course in my first year. This project first involved learning the basics of the computer algebra software package, Mathematica, which we then applied to a numerical study of Rutherford Scattering. I took the role of Scientific leader. We worked well together to solve the assigned problem, produced a report and presented our work to our peers. Throughout the degree course the experimental work involved the analysis of data. In first year laboratory learnt to fit models to data, extract parameters of a fit and to estimate uncertainties, using Python. Skills used in subsequent practical course include using apparatus to collect data and results.I have completed a communication skills module which contributed 25% to the assessment for my first laboratory course. I wrote a review article based on one of the topics covered in a series of Special lectures I attended. I chose to write this report on “The Great Question of Life the Universe and everything”. A talk was also given to group of around 10 peers on a topic of my choice, The Large Hadron Collider.Developing problem-solving skills is an important part of the study of Physics. In second year laboratory experiments learned to plan and assemble equipment for experiments and learn how to systematically approach a physics problem. Another valuable skill obtained is the ability to work as an active member of a team and to meet deadlines for data collection and reports.
