Veterinary surgeon, graduated in 1975. Small Animal House Physician, Glasgow University 1975-'78.Pioneered bond-centred veterinary practice in practice co-owned with her husband, Edward, a veterinary pathologist. Community outreach programmes were introduced to schools, colleges, residential care centres and to the local high security prison. A multidisciplinary community network involving all of the health and social care professions was established.Community outreach programmes encompassed: A. Teaching humane education in all local schools - kindergarten through senior and to several local colleges. Also to local at-risk youth at request of the probation service. B. Advice and support on animal assisted interventions (AAI) was provided to local health and social care facilities. C. In collaboration with Mary Whyham MBE Elizabeth introduced the first planned AAI programme to a UK prison. Subsequently they conducted research into the role of AAI in offender rehabilitation, visiting prisons throughout the UK, and also some overseas prisons. D Supporting older pet owners in transition to supported living, acting as advocate to ensure that they were permitted to keep their companion animal.National & International WorkIn collaboration with Anne Conway, co-founded Canine Partners, the UK assistance dog programme.As a Churchill Fellow she visited outstanding AAI programmes in the USA. She continues to visit model programmes and meet leaders in this field.Conducted research on role of AAI in offender rehabilitation, visiting prisons throughout the UK, and also some overseas prisons. This work in collaboration with Mary Whyham MBE, former Assistant Chief Probation Officer for Lancashire.Visiting lecturer on the human-animal bond to UK veterinary schools.In 2013 was awarded the Inaugural International William F McCulloch Award for Excellence in Human-Animal Interaction Practice and Education.In 2014 was appointed BVA-AWF representative for Scotland.In 2018 was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth llIn 2021 was awarded UK Veterinarian of the YearIn 2022 nominated for the PAAWstival Campaigner & Advocate Award
