I lead projects to help drive the transition to a sustainable, plant-rich food system from farm to fork.At the Plant Based Foods Institute, we convene and conduct research, advocacy, strategic communications, and collaborative initiatives to increase the production and consumption of plant-based foods. A key aim is to mobilize investment and policy for agricultural development to support the shift to plant-rich diets for planetary health. We’re discovering how that shift can improve land use and create opportunities for more farmers. We’re convening research on the effects of dietary change on agricultural markets, land use conversion scenarios, climate savings models, and de-risking strategies for farming transitions. On the ground, we’re helping companies invest in crop diversification, ecological farming practices, nutritious ingredients, and equity across the value chain. I've spent nearly 25 years working in sustainable agriculture and food systems. I designed projects and strategies to advance organic research and education, accelerate organic transition, and enhance the competitiveness of organic crops. I led program and resource development to help farmers improve the productivity and viability of their operations while investing in soil, water, and biodiversity. Much of my work has focused on building public support for sustainable agriculture through Federal policy and programs and the Cooperative Extension system. I’ve also been involved in developing and improving value chains for specialty crops and small grains, with a focus on institutional and specialty packaged food markets. I worked on some of the earliest farm-to-hospital and “healthy food in health care” initiatives and strongly believe in the power of procurement to scale access to good food. I’m most excited about collective, multi-stakeholder learning and action to accelerate a just transition to a sustainable, plant-rich future.

Director, Sustainable Sourcing InitiativePlant Based Foods Institute Oct 2023 - PresentUnited StatesI direct PBFI's strategic initiatives to explore and advance the role of agriculture in the shift to plant-rich diets. I help the plant-based industry invest in agricultural resilience and increase market opportunities for diverse crops, farms, and farmers. We conduct technical assistance and facilitate pilot projects to build sustainable supply chains, and research and advocacy to increase and inform investments in agricultural development. We recently launched an industry community of practice for learning and collaboration to:+Build pipelines for sustainably produced pulses, grains, and seeds to support diverse crop rotations, soil health, and growing demand for minimally processed, nutrient-dense ingredients.+Partner with breeders to create profitable markets for adaptive, resilient crop varieties that perform well in low-input systems and provide functionality in plant-based foods.+Support the true costs of transitioning to organic and other ecological management practices.+Create mechanisms to ensure volumes, price stability, and flexible specifications for farmers; and consistent supply and quality for buyers.+Achieve economies of scale through industry aggregation, collaboration with middle-chain suppliers and distributors, and sidestream innovations. +Expand infrastructure to process and distribute diverse crops, varieties, and identity-preserved ingredients. +Incubate regional plant-based businesses to increase value-added agriculture and rural entrepreneurship.+Leverage Federal agriculture and conservation programs to support research, production, transition, and market development for sustainably produced plant-based foods.+Align outcomes frameworks, navigate the crowded field of certifications, develop benchmarking and verification systems, and help farmers fulfill requirements. We are also building a multi-stakeholder coalition to develop a coordinated action plan for a national commitment to a plant-forward future.
