This role is within the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics project, focussing on marine samples from across the globe with symbiotic relationships. This ambitious project aims to generate reference level genomes for both host and symbiont(s) in combined sequencing.- Routine throughput of samples through upstream wet-lab processes, from dissection to nucleic acid purification, and preparation of extractions for submission to sequencing laboratories- Process optimisation, efficiencies and scaling with a focus of genomics R&D workDNA/RNA extraction, HiC, haplotagging and library preparation- Running and analysing multiple experiments, including using multiple kits/protocols in parallel and assessing their effectiveness

Research Assistant working in laboratories on the Wellcome Genome Campus- COVID-19 Genomics Initiative providing real-time genomic monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in the UK to aid public health response. The team also monitors for genetic mutations which could cause the virus to be more easily transmitted or to escape vaccines. - DNA Pipelines project laboratory based role responsible for performingboth routine techniques in a high throughput environment and niche processes in a bespokeenvironment. As part of team I assist in producing high quality data within definedtimeframes and assist with the everyday running of the laboratory.

Central & college of science ambassador for the university. A public facing role with a wide range of responsibilities depending on what is required at the time or event: - Assisting organise open days & applicant visit days- Leading group campus & accommodation tours- Individual tours for international prospective students and international alumni (Montana University)- Attending external events on behalf of the university - Assisting with clearing events- Prospective student calling to discuss queries & offers

Position entailed calling previous alumni of Swansea University to build relationships with former students and raising money for the 'Swansea Fund' which encompasses following funds:- Personal Hardship funds- Academic Excellence Scholarships- Medical Research Grants - Music & Sport ScholarshipsRole required handing of sensitive and personal information over the phone. GDPR training completed prior.

I was invited to become a project ambassador for the company and help promote the different projects to others after previous volunteer work. I do this through: - Attending careers fairs and Frontier’s briefing weekends- Presentations/Stands at colleges & universities promoting/educating about Frontier’s work (including Bangor Uni & Aberystwyth Uni)- Using social media to share Frontier’s information, articles and project blogs- Writing reviews and articles on various websites about my experiences- Messaging prospective/future volunteers to answer their project related questions

After completing a volunteer placement previous year I was offered an internship as a Research Officer. I was responsible for assisting the project manager with the following over the 3 month summer period: - Assisting management of 45+ volunteers on project and in volunteer house- Ensuring volunteer health & safety at all times- Assisting with the collection, surveying and recording of all project data (Fin photo ID catalogues, QGIS, metadata analysis) - Training of new volunteers weekly in all areas of the project- Daily leading of volunteer activities: e.g. Boat work, Cliff Surveys, Community Outreach, Beach Cleans - Timetabling and organisation of volunteer’s activities- Handling volunteer conflicts and problems when necessary- Co-writer for quarterly scientific report write-ups for FRONTIER (Published in “Society for Environmental Exploration”)- Working with local partner companies and organisations to maintain local relationships vital to the projects’ data collection and success.

Part time role hosting large school groups (Inreach) and the general public to hands on science centre. Worked with a wide range of ages with understanding of different education levels (Early years, KS1, KS2, KS3) and SEN (special education needs) requirements (autism awareness training given). I assisted visitors in the correct use of exhibits and provide encouragement and further information about the exhibits and the science behind them. Outreach activities involved presenting and assisting with delivery of ‘live’ science workshops/presentations at multiple nurseries for toddler and early years events. Additional roles include: - Hosting birthday parties - Admission and retail card and cash transactions- Restocking sales areas and merchandise management- Cleaning of exhibits, exhibition zones and workshop areas

Statistical data collection on behalf of HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency). Telephone communication with alumni to assist them in completing the DLHE (Destination of Leavers Higher Education survey). Role involved handling both sensitive and personal information and negative feedback.

This was a 3 week volunteer placement with Frontier to learn more about the work they undertake and the conservation efforts of cetaceans in the area. Skills learnt include: - Data collection & surveys of various species on tourist cetacean watching boats through visual & photo ID of dorsal fins - Coastal cliff walks to research Dolphins’ reliance on fish farms and behaviour- Weekly beach clean ups to remove rubbish and hazardous material- Following field briefs and writing daily summary reports- Working with others to collaborate research for resident individuals catalogue- Ecological survey’s in southern Tenerife to explore biodiversity in the area - Personal study of resident Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the region with interest into their diving and feeding behaviours.

Work experience placement to develop aquarist skills. Responsibilities included: - Daily water testing of all displays/tanks - Public feedings- Preparation of live food protocols (Artemia)- Cleaning and general maintenance of tanks displays/tanks- Tunnel walks in Ocean tanks to clean lower viewing areas (sharks, stingray and giant sea turtles)- Maintenance on life support systems, pumps and filters and temperature checks
