I love a good “A-ha!” moment – and I had to go old school to get this one. I can still remember the look on the new hire’s face when the diagram I drew on the whiteboard unraveled the mysteries of zone files. Seeing that light bulb go off and knowing that the new hire now understood not just the technical process but the why behind it gave me so much satisfaction. But what was even better was helping her grow and progress to successive levels of opportunity, with those light bulb moments marking the milestones along the way of her professional development. Having started my career being the new hire who knew nothing about what I had gotten myself into, I often wished I had a trainer who didn’t just read the material to me but took the time to answer question, draw on the board if necessary, and present ideas in a relatable way that encouraged confidence. I wanted someone who could still remember what it was like to be new, rather than just repeating facts as a subject matter expert.So, I became that trainer.I relish the times I have developed an employee to their moment of understanding. Jumping in and analyzing training material feeds my need for continuous learning.
