About Elizabeth Angus

Final year student at the University of Leeds currently completing a dissertation regarding Jewish Algerians (1870-1962) and the construction of a sense of French Identity. My academic interests surround decolonial studies and Algerian history. I have had experience in Paris working for l’Office National des combattants et des victimes de guerre (French Office of Veterans and Victims of War), a subdivision of the Ministry of Armed Forces.Modern Languages (French), and Business at the University of Leeds. I’m a Laidlaw scholar (a leadership and research scholarship) working on a project about identifying North Africans in the French Resistance, looking to dismantle misunderstandings of history and the role of soldiers from the French Colonies. This research has helped to inform an exhibition currently at Le Mont Valérien🗣️ Français & English

My project was entitled “Identifying North Africans in the French Internal Resistance”. I worked closely with my Research Supervisor, Professor Nina Wardleworth, to contribute to the exhibition entitled “La France Libérée par son Empire?” (Was France liberated by its empire?) currently being shown at Le Mont Valérien. I consulted archives in SHD Vincennes in Paris as well as working with Deportation archives and family archives. I expanded my research skills in a professional context and realised my true passion for history and the transmission of memory. The research has been presented in various formats outside of the exhibition such as in Academic Conferences which I presented at. Notably I went to the British Houses of Parliament as part of an Undergraduate Research Conference to speak to MPs and key policy makers about my findings. The Laidlaw Foundation funded this experience and I was given complimentary Leadership Training in the format of workshops with career coaches and experiences to expand my cultural capital.

At Mont-Valérien and the Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation (Memorial to Martyrs sent to Nazi Camps) I do guided visits in both French and English as well as helping translate educational materials. I do research in a number of archives (Vincennes, Caen, and the Police Prefecture). I helped to establish a network between the memorials and English-speaking Universities in Paris. As a part of this, I created a database of University links. I also work directly with clients in a public-orientated role.
