With a primary interest in HIV and sexual violence early in my educational career, I chose to pursue both my BS in Public Health and MPH at Florida State University. During this time, I gathered experience in advocacy and outreach through Planned Parenthood, witnessing firsthand how stigma, SA, and the social determinants of health contribute to poor healthcare outcomes. Following this, I soon began my career at CAN Community Health for HIV and Infectious disease as a program specialist I, the primary role of which is rooted in HIV prevention. In this role I have been certified in 500/501 (counseling for HIV), HIV rapid device, and hepatitis C rapid device. Additionally, I have fulfilled the requirements to practice phlebotomy in the state of Florida and utilize these skills daily. While this position has clinical aspects, a core component of this position has been outreach, requiring community partnerships, mobile unit testing, and tabling at local events. These aspects take into consideration the notion that those who need healthcare services the most often are unable to visit physical clinic locations and must be met where they are. I consider myself to be an always learning advocate. It is important to acknowledge that the individuals we meet each day may be experiencing one of the most anxiety inducing events of their lives, and I am at the forefront of this. It is my responsibility to give each individual I meet the knowledge to empower themselves to make sexually healthy choices or produce sexually healthy conversations, a role that cannot be understated in the mission to end HIV. As I progress into my career, I am grateful to continuously learn and engage in the worldwide mission to prevent new HIV infections and be an advocate for those who may have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime.
