Investigating and quantifying the effectiveness of irrigation management strategies to increase crop water use efficiency in the Wisconsin Central Sands, a region that supports a $450 million agricultural industry.

Madison, Wisconsin Area

Collaborated with researchers, institutions and dairy industry partners as a part of the “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for Dairy Production Systems in the Great Lakes Region,” a USDA-funded project based at UW. Investigated soil water dynamics in long-term cropping system trials as part of the Soil Measurements Team. Managed field crew; estimated crop evapotranspiration using a surface energy budget approach; measured soil water content and tension; tested, installed, and maintained over 50 instruments collecting continuous data over two field seasons in Arlington, WI and State College, PA; analyzed resulting data; communicated results to private and public partners.

Chester, Nh

Assisted in management of a 77-acre, organic family farm, including care of 16 pigs, 5 cows, 900 broiler chickens, 50 hens, and 20 turkeys. Tended, weeded, and watered 20 raised bed gardens and orchard; set up efficient irrigation system; maintained fields and fences; made cheese and canned food surplus; served farm customers and sold at farmer’s markets.

Washington D.C. Metro Area

Worked with public policy scholar Ruth Greenspan Bell investigating how insights from behavioral social science research can motivate people to reprogram how they use and conserve resources. Researched potential applications and test projects; collaborated with partners across the country; compiled, summarized, and integrated findings from behavioral psychology research; conducted a test project at the Wilson Center to change recycling habits.

Montreal, Qc

Worked within the GLWL, a McGill University initiative that examines land use change, human modification of the planet, and the status of water resources, led by Dr. Berhard Lehner and Dr. Navin Ramankutty. Reviewed and revised the Global Reservoir and Dam Database of approximately 7,000 entries; validated the accuracy of entries in a timely manner; communicated results effectively with supervisors.

Montreal, Canada Area

Examined the effect of built environment on walking habits of individuals with Type-2 diabetes in the Montreal area as part of a research effort let by Dr. Nancy Ross. Conducted street audits of 201 neighborhoods; compiled, managed, and analyzed resulting data for further use by future studies. Resulting report was awarded 2009 McGill University Undergraduate Research Conference Award in the Health and Social Science division.

Montreal, Canada Area

Researched spatial clustering of aerospace sector manufacturers and contractors, and aerospace equipment and support services within the Montreal and southern Quebec area as part of research project led by Dr. Sebastien Breau. Managed, revised, and coded a dataset of 300 aerospace-related locations; used GIS to geocode data and create clear maps of aerospace sector clustering. Conducted comprehensive literature review of aerospace company development
