I worked as a veterinary assistant wrapping surgery packs,, filling prescriptions, and communicating with clients. I also practiced technical skills including venipuncture, vaccine administration, and proper restraint.

In this position I had the opportunity to lead cases under the supervision of a mentor starting with taking history and pursing diagnostics to identifying a potential diagnosis and suggesting treatment. I performed physical assessments, practiced venipuncture, and administered subcutaneous fluids and vaccines to dogs and cats. Additionally I was able to shadow emergency, orthopedic, theriogenology, oncology, and clinical trials specialties of veterinary medicine

In this position I took blood, metritis, and milk samples from dairy cows for research under the supervision of a veterinarian. I taught an undergraduate student how to run an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in the lab for her thesis project. In the lab, I assisted with daily duties such as reading quad plate growth, autoclaving materials, performing inventory, and maintaining cleanliness of the lab. I also assisted with a study of antibiotic resistance in dairy calves.

My undergraduate thesis project was on evaluating colostrum quality and passive transfer in goats. The goal was to document a relationship between total IgG consumed and IgG present in the blood of kid goats and determine a threshold for adequate passive transfer level. This information is needed because feeding high quality colostrum is the most important event to ensure survivability of the kid. I was responsible for running tests to evaluate colostrum quality and IgG concentration in serum. I have been working on abstracts, a poster, and multiple papers to be published.

I was one of the first math learning assistants at Penn State University and across the entire country. This was a pioneer program to bring learning assistants into math classrooms. This role involved leading lectures for 50 students during professor absences, hosting weekly office hours, and troubleshooting the best way to utilize learning assistants in a math classroom.

In the role of an educator, I performed educational animal programs at the zoo and local schools on topics ranging from Endangered Species to Reptile Programs. I also trained animals, administered medication, prepared diets, maintained cleanliness, and introduced enrichment to the education animals at the zoo. I also assisted with a summer zoo camp. In this job I learned the importance of record- keeping and data entry.

As an intern on an 1800 milking cow dairy, I rotated with different managers including general, herd health, reproduction, heifers, etc. I learned how to diagnose, treat, milk, and artiScially inseminate. The end of the internship cumulates with an individual major project. My project was a case-study at Kreider Farms analyzing genomic testing of dairy cow health traits. The overarching goal of the internship was to gain production animal experience and have a well-rounded perspective of the dairy industry. Personally, I gained a greater comfort and independence on a farm setting.
