I was accepted to work for the Migration Law Clinic at the University of Sussex during the 2021/2022 academic term. The curriculum and skills we learned revolved around access to justice. I worked with legal practitioners and fellow colleagues to provide pro bono legal advice to clients from the surrounding area. Our area of work focused on immigration and refugee law. Responsibilities included completing in-depth research on immigration legislation and procedures in the UK, preparing legal briefs and memorandums, assisting with asylum/visa applications, facilitating interviews both online and in-person, and writing up final advice letters. Issues we dealt with included family reunion applications, fresh asylum claims, and emergency applications stemming from the Ukrainian/Russian war. The team used the intricate database, CLIO, to keep track of our cases, incoming documents or evidence, and ensure we were on the same page as our partners.

Giving campus tours to prospective international students and their families, and school staff members, and answering any questions they may have. I have also been asked to work on specific projects related to my program at Sussex.

Scheduling sessions with basketball coaches and students that take place on private driveways to ensure COVID protocols are being followed and social distancing. Interacting with clients through email and phone to ensure any issues, conflicts, and questions are handled in a timely manner.

My responsibilities encompassed assisting patrons with their pool activities, monitoring and regulating chemical levels in the pool, and performing daily pool maintenance, including vacuuming.
