National Jewish Health specializes in respiratory illness, atopic dermatitis, allergy and immunology patients. For these patients and their families, I provide developmentally appropriate preparation, distraction, education, support and coping techniques for various tests and procedures, developmentally appropriate play and self-expression activities to promote patient's ability to cope with the stressors of hospitalization and/or chronic illness. I helped run and organize the monthly Youth Advisory Council Meetings and activities, conducted the patient activity volunteer training sessions and supervised and oversaw the volunteers in the Teen Lounge and surgery playrooms. I created a rotating 6 month calendar for a variety of weekly Teen Lounge events and activities to be implemented by volunteers. I assisted with the hospital tours for prospective donors and also provided tours for patients and families for upcoming surgical dates. I conducted developmentally appropriate preparations, distraction and support for a variety of surgeries and procedures for a variety of developmental levels. I served as an advocate between patients, families, and the medical team by emphasizing family centered care and patient needs/concerns prior to procedures/tests. I presented weekly research to supervisors on various diagnoses and procedures. During my Pediatric Intensive Care Unit rotation I provided end of life support and therapeutic interventions to patients and their family members and provided opportunities for end of life memory making and grief resources for family members.
