The mission of the Summit was to inform participants about the most pressing environmental issues of the day and to present them with concrete actions to address these actions on a local level. President, Bedford Garden Club 2007-2009Founded in 1911, the Bedford Garden Club (BGC) has been committed to environmental causes from the Farmerettes of World War I to the Victory Gardens of World War II and early support of the Clean Water Act in 1965. In 2009, the BGC co-sponsored the Bedford Environmental Summit under my leadership.

The project was a joint effort by St Matthew’s Episcopal Church and Antioch Baptist Church to raise funds from businesses and individuals throughout Bedford. For the first time in its history, the Ad Council agreed to participate in a local rather than national campaign that resulted in donated media of over $14 million. According to Mayor Bloomberg, this was "the most ambitious and comprehensive teacher recruitment campaign in New York City's history." Preliminary figures showed that, in one year, teacher applications increased over 94%. Over the project's lifetime, Appleseed provided DOE with pro bono time and services valued at more than $15 million. Show less
