Summer Placement in the New Business Department.I was appointed to a summer placement in the New Business Department at Europanel, the UK's leading Consumer Market Research Company in London. Working within a close team, I was responsible for the analysis of brand and pricing strategies of major consumer brands across Europe. I particularly specialised in Frozen Food brands. I also analysed parts of the pre-packed meals market. I liaised with clients across Europe providing information on consumer demographics, brand pricing and market share. I helped develop and create an internal and external social networking site. I assisted in PowerPoint presentations and account management for the Senior International Consumer Insights Director. This placement increased my knowledge and experience of working with commercial customers, and of bidding for and winning new business as well as increasing my database, Excel and computing skills. I am still in contact with many colleagues and fully enjoyed my time within the company.

I worked as Partner's Assistant, helping each of the three Partners as necessary. I researched material related to their insurance law and other case loads. I accompanied the Partners to client meetings. I also attended hearings in the Old Bailey and the Royal Courts of Justice. In addition to this, I was responsible for diary management and photocopying, filing and switchboard duties. My awareness of and enthusiasm for the business world in London increased significantly along with my knowledge of London business etiquette.

Working for the Commercial Director of The Stroke Association charity, I produced and maintained a cost benefit analysis of the services the charity provides to stroke survivors. These services are funded by Local Authorities and NHS commissioning bodies as part of treatment and social care of stroke victims. My cost-benefits analysis work, demonstrated a compelling commercial case and has resulted in the charity using it to win many new and renewed contracts. The analysis remains useful to this day.

In my GAP year I taught English at a secondary school in Kedah, the northern state of Malaysia. My role within the school was originally to help students improve their spoken English, specifically pronunciation and communication. However after a few weeks, my role expanded to teaching the majority of the school all parts of the English language, as well as becoming head Netball Coach and helping out with various Drama Productions and Assemblies. My GAP year also taught me the importance of project management. In preparation, I produced an 18 month plan to organise and fund my GAP year. I executed the project in phases each with a deadline - including researching which organisation to go with; getting through the selection interview; organising work and sponsorship to raise funds (I raised almost £5000); obtaining visas, vaccines, medical and other certificates, and finally getting to the airport punctually. I learned the importance of good planning, that early milestones are as important as the end objective; to ask for help if necessary (people were very enthusiastic); and most importantly to keep up my own energy and enthusiasm.

In addition to the purely monetary value, this has taught me the values of taking responsibility, reliability and customer focus. At the Aviator Hotel, I was given responsibility for the whole corporate events department for the period between one manager leaving and his successor being appointed. All my catering employers have repeatedly asked me back for further work. These jobs all require a high degree of customer focus and of course all customers are VIPs - some even more so than others. For example I worked at an event hosted by Ringo Starr, where I was pleased to be complimented on my smile by Sir Paul McCartney!

in the Defence Systems Division. Specifically I worked in the Bid Production and Proposal Creation functions of this high technology company. I operated a number of their specialist IT systems and software packages used in producing bids, proposals and simulations. This gave me IT experience well beyond the normal Microsoft Office toolset, however I am also skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.
