PhD Title: Investigating the communication of retention strategies in clinical trials (by published research papers). My PhD is a mixed-methods project looking at how retention strategies are communicated through the lifecycle of a clinical trial from the design stage of the trial, the consent stage and also investigating trial participants views and opinions on the use of retention strategies and their communication in trials. So far as part of my PhD I have completed the following projects; • How much is the lack of retention evidence costing trial teams in Ireland and the UK? – published.• How do trial teams plan for retention during the design stage of the trial? A scoping review protocol - published.• How do trial teams plan for retention during the design stage of the trial? A scoping review – accepted and awaiting publication.• Retention strategies are routinely communicated to potential trial participants but often differ from what was planned in the trial protocol – submitted for reviewFrom these projects I have gained research experience in quantitative and qualitative methodologies; • Conducting a scoping review; writing and publishing a scoping review protocol, conducting database searches, screening, data extraction and analysis and publication of the review. • Deductive content analysis. • Writing and formatting research papers.• Writing ethics applications.

Title: A pilot questionnaire-based study to investigate patient perception of what the challenges to recruitment to a renal randomised controlled trial registry might be.• In my final year of my undergraduate degree, I led this project to completion and the work has been published.• Reviewed the existing literature and evidence in this field to inform the research. • Interacted with patients in Cork University Hospital to collect data via questionnaire. • Coded and analysed the data in SPSS (v16) using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. • Collaborated with co-authors to write, edit, and publish the paper.
