About Ellen Van De Graaf
London-based artist since approx the year 2003, Ellen is an abstract painter, whose practice is about materiality and is very process driven. She usually works with thin layers of acrylic paint, adding and subtracting by painting on and scraping off. She also sometimes uses found materials. She has an interest in architecture and is inspired by all the textures and colours that she sees while walking around in London. She is excited by the way that nature interrupts the architecture. The themes rumbling underneath are: decay, the eternity of life, and currently, most importantly vulnerability. She has given art workshops at Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate and collaborated with interior designer Lisa Burke. She designed the tattoos for the films 'Trainspotting 2' and ‘Pan’, and is looking forward to more projects like that in the future. Previous illustration clients include; Publicis, Frieze, The Guardian, Elle Decoration and Marie Claire.
